The Department of French & Italian presents a Gertrude F. Weathers Lecture by

FranÇoise Gadet

“Youth Language” in Parisian Suburbs

Thursday April 12, 2007
5:30 pm
Oak Room, Indiana Memorial Union
Reception preceding talk (5:00 pm)

Abstract: This talk will examine relations between a social phenomenon and a linguistic phenomenon. Is it true that something structurally new is emerging in the French language? A difference must be carefully drawn between forms and practices among young people.

About the speaker: Françoise Gadet, a linguist of world-wide fame, specializes in the analysis of colloquial French. She is professor of linguistics at the Université de Paris X and is the author of four books, coeditor of two books, and author of numerous articles. Her books Le français ordinaire at Le français populaire are regarded by many linguists as the most complete and best descriptions of colloquial French. The visit of Professor Gadet to the United States is co-organized by the University of Illinois and Indiana University.

Sponsors: The Mary-Margaret Barr Koon Fund of the Dept. of French and Italian, Gertrude Force Weathers Lecture Series, College Arts and Humanities Institute, Dept. of Linguistics, Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese, West European Studies, Horizons of Knowledge Lecture Series, Dept. of Anthropology.
