Placement and Permissions
Information for students matriculating Summer 2013 or later
If you have previous knowledge of Italian, you should take the on-line placement exam linked through the Office of First-Year Experience website. The scores will be made available to you during the orientation session for freshmen or transfer students. The placement exam is used only to place you at the correct level as you start your language study at IU. It is not used to establish proficiency in the language or to receive any university credit. The on-line placement exam costs $50, which will be billed to your Bursar account.
If you have completed the placement exam, and you have received a score of 41 or above, please complete this request form to obtain permission to register in the appropriate Italian course. You should first look at our course schedule and choose one or two class sections that would fit in your schedule. NOTE: Prerequisites for our basic language courses are waived during freshman orientation.
Anyone receiving a score of 75 or higher may request a personal placement exam with the Director of Language Instruction in Italian, Prof. Colleen Ryan, to see if they are ready to advance to M300.
Students who take the on-line placement exam and test into M250 may apply for special credit for M200 (3 credit hours) after they have completed M250 with a grade of C or better. The M250 course must be the first course in Italian taken at IUB. M250 is considered the “validating course.”
Students who take the on-line placement exam and test into M250 and then take a personalized placement exam with Prof. Ryan and test into M300 may claim special credit for M200 (3 cr.) and M250 (3 cr.) after they have completed M300 with a grade of C or better. M300, which is the “validating course” in this case, must be the first course in Italian taken at IUB. M301 may be substituted for M300 with permission of Prof. Ryan.
Fees may be assessed depending on the student's credit hour enrollment for specified semesters. Special Credit is awarded with an S grade.
A transfer course can NOT be used as a validating course to apply for Special Credit. A student can only take the IUB validating course ONCE in an effort to achieve the minimum grade of C to then apply for Special Credit. Also, a student who is fluent in Italian due to being raised or educated in Italy is NOT eligible to receive Special Credit in Italian.
Information for students who matriculated prior to Summer 2013
If you have previous knowledge of Italian, and you did not take a placement test during orientation when you first came to IU, you should take the on-line placement exam. The exam costs $50, which will be billed to your Bursar account.
If you took the proctored placement exam administered by BEST in Franklin Hall (available prior to May 2013), your score was sent to the Department of French and Italian. You should contact the Department to find out your score and placement.
If you took the proctored placement exam administered by BEST in Franklin Hall (available prior to May 2013), then you may be eligible for Special Credit for M100. Students who scored at least 40 on this exam automatically received 4 credit hours for M100. The proctored exam was not designed to facilitate placement above M150, so higher-level Special Credit may not be based on this exam.
Foreign Language Requirement
Students cannot fulfill the foreign language requirement of the College of Arts & Sciences or other schools on the IUB campus (nor the university’s general education requirements) simply by taking the on-line placement exam. Depending on the requirement, it may be fulfilled by taking AP or IB exams (See the Office of Admissions website). However, normally a student with prior knowledge of Italian must take the on-line IU placement exam and then complete at least one “validating course” in Italian.
