This week we will be considering how to go about answering an essay question in history. Answer the questions below in reference to this hypothetical essay question:

How did the Second Industrial Revolution and the development of a mass popular culture change the way in which the future was conceptualized? Discuss.

1. In responding to this question you will need to define the crucial terms. In the boxes below give your working definition of these terms.

A. Second Industrial Revolution

B. Mass Popular Culture

2. You would need to explain how the Second Industrial Revolution reshaped popular culture and give a concrete example of the new forms of culture that appeared in its wake.

A. In the space below indicate how the Second Industrial Revolution created new forms of popular culture:

B. In the space below very briefly indicate how the career of Jules Verne could be used as an example of the creation of new forms of literature in the late 19th century.

C. In the space below briefly explain how the new mass market for popular culture produced "pulp" science fiction.

D. In the space below briefly explain how the Tom Swift stories are an example of the development of this new form of "pulp" science fiction.

E. In the space below, describe some of the ways in which patterns from pulp science fiction were transfered to films and television.

3. In order to discuss how the Second Industrial Revolution changed visions of the future, you will need to compare these futures with those created in earlier eras. (It is worth noting that here, as is frequently the case in answering essay questions, you will need to organize the material in a different way than has been the case so far in the semester.) We have been focusing on the differences between the future of Christian Apocalypse and that of the idea of progress. In order to answer this question, you will need to think about what the Apocalypse and progress have in common that differentiates them both from the futures later generated by mass popular culture. You may find this difficult, but give it your best shot, and we will discuss it on Thursday.

A. Give three characteristics shared by the Christian Apocalypse and 18th and 19th century visions of progress, but not by many of the futures generated by mass popular culture.

First characteristic shared by the Christian Apocalypse and 18th and 19th century visions of progress

Second characteristic shared by the Christian Apocalypse and 18th and 19th century visions of progress

Third characteristic shared by the Christian Apocalypse and 18th and 19th century visions of progress

B. Take each of the characteristics you have given above, and show how the futures generated by mass popular culture often lacked these characteristics.

An example of a way the futures generated by mass popular culture lacked the first characteristic

An example of a way the futures generated by mass popular culture lacked the second characteristic

An example of a way the the futures generated by mass popular culture lacked the third characteristic

4. Compose the introductory paragraph for the hypothetical essay, drawing upon the ideas you have generated above. Be sure to present the basic thesis of the paper and give the reader an overview of the kinds of issues that you would be dealing with.
