Freshmen Testing Information

Placement and Credit Testing
Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE):
If you have studied a foreign language for one year or more you must take this test before meeting with your academic advisor. The test you take during your program does not need to be the same language you plan to study while at IU. In some cases, foreign language credit may be awarded.

The following foreign language tests are offered during the program: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.

Mathematical Skills Assessment (MSA):
You must take this test before meeting with your academic advisor. The results will be used only for placement purposes and will allow you and your advisor to plan future course work. Your score will have no impact on your grade point average and will not appear on your official transcript.

The FLPE and MSA are included as part of the first day of your program. The results will be used for placement purposes and will allow you and your advisor to plan future course work. Your scores will have no impact on your grade point average and will not appear on your official transcript.

Optional Placement / Exemption Exams
Certain departments offer specific exams for advanced placement or IU credit during the Orientation program. None are required, and you can sign up to take one or two of these exams. All tests are graded and placement is determined prior to your academic advising appointment. If you have taken an AP test in a similar subject, you are still encouraged to take the optional exam. IU will accept the better of the two scores. Each test lasts for one hour. These and other exams are also offered at the beginning of the fall semester; watch for details about all optional exams in your Welcome Week Schedule booklet.

Biology Exam:
You should consider taking this exam only if you have received excellent grades in two years of high school biology. Students who pass both parts of the exam can earn up to 6 hours of college credit.

Calculus Advanced Placement Exam:
If you have completed a one-year high school or college calculus course, you are eligible to take this exam. If you excel, you may receive credit for the first semester of college calculus and proceed to the second semester. Calculators are not allowed.
