Frequently Asked Questions
What is Welcome Week?
Welcome Week is the period between the official opening of campus for fall and the first day of classes.
Welcome Week events are designed to help students and family get acquainted with campus while meeting
other students, staff, and faculty. These events will also help you become comfortable with IU's
Resources, opportunities and expectations.
What Types of Events are during Welcome Week?
Staring with the official kickoff, the Freshman Induction Ceremony, Welcome Week is filled with large
and small events to ease your transition and to welcome back returnees. Through opportunities such as the Academic Orientation, Open Houses, Community Service, Job Fairs, and games, culture, traditions – and even shopping- this week is catered explicitly for you.
Do People Really Go to Welcome Week?
Yes! These events have been designed to help students and family feel more connected with others and
with IU. Many have become traditions that you don't want to miss! Whether it's the pomp and circumstance
of the Freshman Induction Ceremony or the excitement of "Traditions and Spirit," students and
family will be a part of something truly special.
Why Should I Go to Events?
Go because you want to meet other students. Or, go because you want to feel a part of something bigger
than yourself - part of all the students who have been at Indiana University . Go because you want to
learn about what resources and opportunities IU has to offer now. As a bonus, enjoy the foods, prizes
and "free stuff" you may find along the way. Whatever your motivation - go to Welcome Week
events. You'll be glad you did! You’ll start to know this campus – this new home of yours – in new and fun ways.
Students should sure to read and hold onto the Welcome Week Booklet and Schedule for details on event times and locations. Residence Hall students will get this booklet at check-in. Students not living in the halls can get a booklet from the Office of First Year Experience Programs (228 Franklin Hall), at the Freshman Induction Picnic, or at any Residence Hall desk. For any additional questions, please feel free to contact the Office of First Year Experience Programs at 812.855.HELP.
