Stop 3

This stop is highly deformed with faulted and folded marine sediments with minor regional metamorphism and dynamic metamorphism in the fault zones. The rock is mostly shallow marine sediments and a rock called the Fransiscan melange. The Fransciscan melange is typical of a jumbled and deformed deposit of marine sediment and exotic pieces of oceanic basalt that are found in areas where oceanic crust has been thrust onto a continental margin. A large piece of deformed and fractured highly mafic basalt is contained in the lower parts of the stop. The sediment to the right (east) is tightly folded.
