1. a. Where is the lowest point? SE quarter is the best answer because there is more low land there, but SW is also okay because a few points are equally low. (1 point)
1. b. Where is the highest point?SW quarter is the best answer because there is a long ridge of hills higher than 280 meters, but NW and NE are also okay because there are a few hills that reach 280 m there, too. (1 point)
2. Topographic profile from A to B. See diagram below. (total 10 points): 5 points for having a generally correct profile that is higher in the west, towards A, than in the east, towards B. Another 2 points for having a low of 160-180 meters in Quarter IV. Another 2 points for having a high of 280+ meters in Quarter 1. 1 point for having the line at point A start at 260 meters, which is very clear on the topographic map.
3. Boundaries between rock groups. See diagram above. (total 8 points). 2 ponts for putting boundary between M1 and M2 in quarter II. 2 points for putting boundary between M2 and M3 in Quarter II. 1 point each for placing four boundaries in quarter I, from right to left: M3 and M4, M4 and M3, M3 and M4, and M4 and M3. There are a few additional details that you might have added.
4. Are rocks older or younger in the east? Older (1 point)
5. Are the ricks in the east higher or lower elevation? Higher, but see other possibilitiesin 1.a. above (1 point).
6. What is the approximate absolute age of rocks in Monroe County? Should have an age range close to 320-354 million years old, which is the range of ages corresponding to the Mississippian Period. Some variation in the answer is okay due to slightly different numbers reported on different time scales, and also a number younger than 320 if you included part of the Pennsylvanian Period for the Raccoon Creek Group. Only half credit given for a single date that falls within the Mississippian range. (2 points).
7. Age of rocks in the area where you are from. The age depends on where it is you are from. Everyone got this correct. (1 point).
