Occurrence of Earthquakes in the U.S.:
- Aim: to explore the occurrence and characteristics of recent earthquakes
in California and elsewhere in the U.S..
- Website:
http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/QUAKES/CURRENT/index.html
- Contents: listings of links to real-time earthquake maps, seismogram
displays and other earthquake information.
- Measurements and details of earthquakes from seismographs.
- Assesment of earthquake intensity from shakemaps.
Procedures:
- The site provides a listing of links to maps and other information
that describes the occurrences of earthquakes in various regions.
- Select
California
under the title "Real-time Earthquake Maps."
- This site presents a map of California indicating the positions and
magnitude of earthquakes in the past week.
- The earthquakes are color-coded according to their time of occurrence
(last hour, last day, last week)
- The size of the square representing each event is proportion to the
magnitude of the earthquake.
- Each square provides a link to a close-up map of the vicinity of the
event and a listing of all earthquakes within that area, which link to details
of the individual events.
- Below the map of California are notes (including the number of earthquakes
on the map) and descriptions that include links entitled:
- Did you feel it?
- ShakeMaps for Southern CA and Northern CA
- Special maps for Long Valley, Los Angeles and San Francisco
- Lists of big earthquakes and all earthquakes
- In the exercise information from these various links will be examined.
- Separately select
United States
under the title "Real-time Earthquake Maps" and click on
Mid-America
on the map.
- This site presents a map of the central U.S. indicating the positions
and magnitude of earthquakes in the past week and past 6 months.
- The earthquakes are color-coded according to their time of occurrence
(past hour, past week, past 6 months)
- The size of the square representing each event is proportion to the
magnitude of the earthquake.
- Each square provides a link to a close-up map of the vicinity of the
event and a listing of all earthquakes within that area, which link to details
of the individual events.
- Below the map of the central U.S. are notes (including the number
of earthquakes on the map) and descriptions that include links entitled:
- In the exercise information from these various links will be examined.
