General Information:

• This exercise is one of the five options of which two should be answered.
• It involves evaluation of controls on seawater salinity and its temporal and spatial variability.
• The questions are given on the next pages and in oncourse .
• Answers to all questions should be submitted via  oncourse .
• Check the exercise set II noticeboard ( news ) for announcements.

• Maps of global surface ocean salinity are presented at various sites. The recommended link that presents an annual average of global sea surface salinity is: http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/ferret/images/levitus_tour_p2.gif
• Ocean salinities and temperatures vary with water depth, affecting density.  Data for ocean temperatures and salinities from Levitus's "Climatological Atlas of the World Ocean" can be accessed and viewed with a variety of user-defined options at: http://ingrid.ldeo.columbia.edu/expert/SOURCES/LEVITUS94/oceanviews2.html
• A second site, where maps can also be viewed with user-defined options, provides access to maps of monthly salinity data from Levitus's "Climatological Atlas of the World Ocean": http://ingrid.ldeo.columbia.edu/SOURCES/.LEVITUS94/.MONTHLY/.sal/html+viewer?
