General Information:
- This exercise is one that is required
.
- It involves examination of spatial, temporal and depth variations
in ocean temperatures and interpretation of the causes for that variability.
- The questions are given on three pages (
next
, )and in oncourse
.
- Answers to all questions should be submitted via
oncourse
.
- Check the exercise set II noticeboard (
news
) for announcements.
Information on Ocean Temperatures and Websites:
- Maps of global surface ocean temperatures are presented at various
sites, including:
- an annual average of global sea surface temperature (SST):
- daily updates of global SST:
- A major focus of the exercise is interactive use of the Levitus ocean
atlas
- global images of sea surface temperatures for each month (
monthly images
)
- global images of sea temperatures at various ocean depths (
depth images
)
- A discussion of the characteristics of ocean temperature and salinity
and of the layered structure of the ocean can be found at:
http://www.es.flinders.edu.au/~mattom/IntroOc/lecture07.html
- If any of the sites become inaccessible, I will provide information
about alternatives or additions in the announcements here (
news
).
- If you encounter any difficulties with access to any of the sites
please notify me by email (
simon@indiana.edu
) and I will attempt to resolve problems, or suggest
other options as soon as possible.
