OCEAN TEMPERATURES (contd.)
|
Introduction to Questions on Ocean Temperatures:
- The questions are outlined in tables (
first page
, previous page
, this page)
- they require examination of spatial variations in solar heat flux.
- they require examination of various temperature maps
- current global sea surface temperatures.
- annual average global sea surface temperatures.
- temperatures of the deep ocean
- latitudinal variations in sea surface and deep ocean temperatures
- temporal variation in sea surface temperatures
- Reminder: you should submit your answers via

| Temporal variations in Sea Surface Temperatures |
The Levitus atlas of oceanographic physical
and chemical is accessable online and is here used to examine monthly variation
in sea surface temperatures in two basins.
The instructions for use of the atlas are provided on a separately (
Atlas Guidelines
). Use the
MONTHLY
profiles, selecting temperature and using the guidelines
for the display below help to set the parameters for each figure, with the
box numbers referring to the sites on the display.
In addition an extra box entitled time will appear below the uppermost box
(depth). By selecting the buttons for successive months (Jan, Feb, Mar, etc.)
an entire annual sequence of monthly temperatures can be viewed. |
| 18. |
In which months do the temperatures at the following
locations reach their maximum and minimum values. Give details of
both the months and values of the high and low temperatures for each site.

The Levitus atlas of oceanographic physical
and chemical is accessable online and is here used to examine seasonal changes
in temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean.
The instructions for use of the atlas are provided on a separately (
Atlas Guidelines
). Use the
SEASONAL
profiles, selecting temperature and using the guidelines
for the display below help to set the parameters for each figure, with the
box numbers referring to the sites on the display.
In addition an extra box entitled time will appear below the uppermost box
(depth). By selecting the buttons for successive seasons (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun,
etc.) an entire annual sequence of seasonal temperatures can be viewed.
