Comments on Instructor Responsibilities and Student Learning
  • My main goal is to develop your understanding of the history of the Earth.
  • I want you to succeed in this class, please let me help you in this endeavor.
  • Make use of the resources available:
    • Text, visuals from lectures, revision guides, and instructors.
    • If you are unsure about any class material, please ask for clarification.
    • If you have problems with access to oncourse contact UITS.
    • I always try to provide prompt responses to email messages.
  • Please follow simple guidelines for email etiquette:
    • Always include a title in the subject line (include G302).
    • Send messages to simon@indiana.edu.
    • Always first check for information on the web pages and oncourse .
      • You are less likely to receive a prompt reply if the answer to your enquiry is readily accessible on the web.
    • Always begin your message with the name(s) of the intended recipient(s).
      • Email messages sometimes get sent to the wrong person or an incorrect address. This is a simple courtesy.
    • Always author your message with your name.
      • This helps us to identify the author of the message - not all email addresses are self-explanatory.
      • It also helps inform instructors of your preferred form of address.
  • Office hours operate on a first-come, first-served basis, no appointment is necessary.
  • If office hours aren't convenient for you, please send an email message to arrange a separate, mutually convenient time for an appointment.
  • Communication is vital.
    • Please keep me informed about illnesses and absences.
    • Please notify me immediately if you're unable to fulfill any of the class requirements.
    • My willingness to accept late assignments and facilitate alternate arrangements is directly proportional to the timeliness of the request!

Expectations
  • You are encouraged to explore and consider the topics for the discussion sessions with classmates, as a prelude to the formal group interactions intended to faciltiate that process.
    • Note, however, that your answers should represent your individual effort. All your answers must be written in your own choice of words.
    • I reserve the right to award zero points to students who submit identical answers to the written questions.
  • Consultation with other students for the timed on-line quizzes is not permitted. These assignments are designd to test what you learnt from the class.
    • Again, I reserve the right to award zero points to students who submit identical answers to the quizzes.
  • All of the written examinations are closed book, but you are welcome to consult the information on the maps on the classroom walls.
