Research-Based Science Learning
It is essential, if not critical that
students concerned with Globalization, Environmental Values and Attitudes,
Sustainability in whatever form: Urbanization, Transportation, Ecosystem
Conservation, Hydroclimatic Perturbations and Change, Energy Systems, are
equipped not only with a conceptual or abstract understanding of ideal
realizations, but bridge the gap into a practical perspective of the dimensions
of our changing environment. Students will become familiar with the natural and
anthropogenic perturbations that initiate or sustain these changes, the variety
of avenues available for examining these changes and develop critical thinking
and broad perspectives in understanding the dynamics involved. The view of earth
from space has motivated and enhanced a more global and
integrative perspective of our world. Satellite observation enables powerful
visualization of the changes that are taking place in our environment, and
provides a tool to enable better understanding of the response of our life
sustaining systems.
Remote sensing and aerial photographs will be used to establish a visual and qualitative understanding of changes: seeing aids believing (boats in the Aral Sea), and related techniques applied to analyze the observed changes. Students will be assigned a particular ecosystem for examining any physical, chemical or biological changes that are taking place, and the resulting impacts, pressures, interventions and societal response. The course is intended for both science and non-science majors familiar with the use of computers (data analysis, presentation or visualization..) and willing to learn and utilize a GIS program
