Welcome to History G380:  Early China.

Homework #1 will be handed out in class; it's due back Thursday, August 31.

Hi!  You've linked to the first of the Class Topics pages for G380.  Dated Class Topics pages are the way that class sessions will be previewed.  I'll be using these links to post online reading assignments (the course "textbook") and remind you of written assignments due dates.  I'll also briefly (well, sometimes not so briefly) outline what I have in mind for the class of this date, both in terms of topics I hope we'll cover, and -- more important -- topics I'd like you to think about before class and be ready to discuss.

For our first class, I'll be saying a few things about the course contents, requirements, and so forth, and then we'll consider some large-scale issues that it's good to have in mind as you study early China -- questions such as, "What is history -- how is it different from life as we live it, and what do we expect to learn when we study it?"  "What qualifies as 'early' China, and what sorts of things can we -- and can't we -- know about it?"

I'll be handing out a print syllabus in class, but all the information on the syllabus will be available on this website as well.

If you'd like to get started on the initial readings for our next class, you can return to the Schedule page and click on Thursday's topic.  The "General Introduction" reading would be the place to begin.
