Opening and background story
 

The game starts with a cutscene of a bank robbery.  Our unnamed main character is betrayed by his girlfriend.

Shot by by the woman he loved, he is left behind to take the fall for the robbery. 

However, while being transferred, the Police convoy is attacked by an unknown group.  The group is rescuing one of their members who was also being transferred.

Since the group is not interested in our character, they let him go free.  Police assume he and the other convicts perished in the explosion following the attack. The explosion also damages the Callaghan Bridge leaving Portland cut off from the rest of the city.
