Activity 4

In this activity, you will write an essay describing something you have learned in the course so far as though you were writing it for a peer who is not in the class. Though Fred will be grading it, don't write it with him in mind. Your essay will be graded both for its content and the quality of the writing. You will have an opportunity to rewrite your essay and improve your grade.

Choose one of the following questions, and write about 1000 words (roughly 4 double-spaced pages) on it.

The article by Strogatz and Stewart is likely to be helpful.

  1. What is a model in cognitive science? How are computers used in modeling?
  2. What is periodicity, and what is its role in animals, including people?
  3. What are coupled oscillators, and how can they help to explain phenomena such as animal gaits?
