Lake Monroe Geocaching Extravaganza!

We're back in action! We are going hiking near Lake Monroe to find some caches on Wednesday April 17th. It will be a loop trail including 8 caches that we will look for. This event will be around 3 hours total including travel time. The plan is to meet right outside the front entrance of Willkie Center Building at 4:45pm, we will leave at 5pm, and be back by 8pm. Plan on bringing standard clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty, and sturdy shoes to hike in (flip-flops or sandals are NOT recommended). Bring a water bottle and any snacks you want for the trip. If people are interested and have time, we may go out to eat afterwards so plan on having some money if this option sounds good to you. Please RSVP to the event here.

Night Geocaching Hike Downtown
Friday, April 13th 2012 | 6pm @ B-Line Trail

We're going to walk the B-Line Trail in downtown Bloomington where we'll spend 1-3 hours finding geocaches in the dark. It's an urban trail, so we won't have to deal with mud, bushes, etc. It's entirely paved. Bring a flashlight or team up with someone else that has one! We'll have a few extra GPS units and flashlights. You can bring friends! It should be a very fun event for those people new to geocaching and others that aren't. The carpool will meet at 5:50pm at the circle drive in front of the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU).
Send an e-mail to iugeocaching[at]gmail[dot]edu if you would like a ride, so we'll know how many cars we'll need!

If you'd like to meet us there, you can park near the giant statue of a dining table near City Hall at 401 N. Morton St.

Intro to Geocaching & the Bucket o' Fun
Sunday, April 1st 2012 | 1pm @ Wells Library Lobby

We want to show YOU how to geocache. We'll be doing a short 1 hour intro to geocaching session by showing you how to use a GPS and taking you to find 3 geocaches on campus. Following the introduction, if you're interested in continuing (feel free to leave at this point or come just for this), we will be taking a group to find Bucket 'O Fun, an epic adventure geocache on campus. It will take approximately 4-5 hours to complete with our team, as it is a difficult 5 stage geocache, meaning we have to find one stage that will give us information to go to the next stage. This is one of the most fun and epic geocaches within 30 miles of Bloomington, so it's definitely worth coming. Make sure to wear clothes and shoes that can get a little dirty! This will be one of the most memorable events of your schoolyear! More information about the cache and our facebook event page.

Micro Marathon - Leap Year Flash Mob
Wednesday, February 29, 2012 | 6pm @ Sample Gates

This event will be an extrememly short race from the Sample Gates to Dunn Meadow. After the race we will all meet in the bowling alley at the Union. Five dollars will get you unlimited bowling for two hours including shoe rental. The main point of this event is that Groundspeak would like to break a record on this day and everyone who logs a cache (like a quick flash mob for example) will help contribute.

As the title suggests this is a flash mob so timing and planning are very important. Please check the cache page for the schedule breakdown and register ahead of time so we can have an official running number for you if you plan to attend. This is going to be a quick fun event and we hope to see you there. If the weather is bad we may just meet at the bowling alley and skip the race. Check the cache page to learn if we need to cancel the race.

Captain V's pub quiz
Saturday, January 14th 2012 | 6pm @ Irish Lion (212 West Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington)

The event will be a pub quiz with 5 rounds of questions and 10 questions per round. The categories are: Science, Geography, History, Geocaching, and Literature & Arts. You can play alone or in a team of up to 3 people. The winner or winning team will receive a prize with lots of geocaching goodies. You do not need to be 21 to enter the upstairs room where the event will be held. Please RSVP on the cache page well before the event to help with planning.

First Annual Reservoir Ramble Geocache Challenge
Saturday, February 4th 2012 | 10am-4pm @ Lake Monroe

All cachers who complete the entire Challenge by 4 p.m. will be entered into a drawing to win a 2012 Annual Entrance Pass for Indiana State Parks & Reservoirs.

TrailMix 21 - Yellowwood Scarce O Fat Trail
Saturday, April 9th at 10am

More than 30 geocachers from around the state gathered for this event. More than 30 caches were found along this 4 mile trail. The trail is rated about a 3 star terrain and is a loop, so it started and finished near the parking lot. Towards the end, the trail brought us to High King Hill, where we could see the entire lake and miles and miles of the forest. It was a great view. Even the rain didn't stop us from going on this TrailMix. We met on campus at 9:30am to carpool over to Yellowwood State Forest, which is 7 miles east of Bloomington.

5th Annual Geocache Challenge at Spring Mill State Park
Saturday, February 5th between 11 & 4pm

This annual event was kicked off by the Springing for Breakfast in Bloomington Vol. 2 where we ate at the local restaraunt, Runcible Spoon. After charging up we split into two teams of 4 and headed for the park. We arrived right on time despite bad weather. The theme this year was big trees. The challenge was finding eight caches, reading an information sheet about a tree type and writing down any numbers concealed within the information text. After getting all the numbers teams had to add all the numbers and then use these numbers to decode the answer to a question. After approximately three hours most teams had completed the challenge. The two IU teams took first and second place in the event. Winning is always good, but we had a lot of fun regardless of where we placed. Afterwards some of the members decided two events was hardly enough and went on to find 17 more caches! Now that is a full day of geocaching. Looking forward to next year.

Pate Hollow Winter Hike

The trail is 7.7 miles long but there are multiple loops in the trail you can take, so the hike can be shorter depending on how far we want to go. I'm sure that people will be leaving at different times depending on interest. Please e-mail if you have any questions!

Please RSVP for the carpool so we can arrange rides! We will leave from the IMU circle drive (by the hotel lobby) at 11:30am.
