The mission of the Department of Geography at Indiana University is to be a national and international center of excellence in research and instruction within key subfields of geography. The key subfields are atmospheric science, geographic information science (GIS), human-environment interaction, and human geography. In atmospheric science, specific fields of research include air quality, biosphere-atmosphere interaction, climate change, and renewable energy. In GIS, particular emphasis is placed on remote sensing, statistical and numerical modeling, and the application of GIS to conservation, health, and telecommunications. Within the human-environment theme, the emphasis is on land-change science, cultural and political ecology, and sustainable development. In human geography, we focus on transportation, economic geography, regional development, urban-economic restructuring, globalization, tourism, and landscape. Read more >>

Dan Knudsen receives the Ryan Award for exceptional contributions to international programs and studies. For outstanding contributions to the field and discipline of Recreation, Tourism and Sport (RTS) Geography, the Association of American Geographers has awarded Dan Knudsen the Roy Wolfe Award. The 2009 European Academy of Wind Energy Scientific Award was given to Rebecca Barthelmie “for her extraordinary efforts and achievements in wind energy research”. |
