Projects Overview
IUB Geography offers a variety of research opportunities. Students gain valuable research experience through the multidisciplinary approach in and beyound the department. Atmospheric Science program has an association with the Midwestern regional center of the National Institute for Global and Environmental Change (NIGEC) and the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population and Environmental Change (CIPEC) . Students can also expect to participate in faculty research projects funded by NOAA, NSF, DOE/NIGEC and USDA.
The department maintains two 46m research towers and labs (just north of Bloomington and in Michigan) as part of the AmeriFlux network. These facilities provide access to state-of-art micrometeorological and atmosphere chemistry/composition instrumentation, in addition the department has an extensive array of other equipment. Faculty in the program have also developed a fully coupled gas-particle atmospheric chemistry model (ISOPART) which is available for use in graduate research.
Students have access to a full array of facilities for these analyses including specialized programs such as TransCAD GIS for the analyzing problems related to transportation. The department also maintains numerous databases related to personal and commodity transport flows, migration, and labor force participation.
