1. The length of time that the sun is above the horizon has an important influence upon the amount of solar radiation which will be received at a location on a given day. The following table presents information on the duration of sunlight for December 21st by latitude.

a) Plot a graph of this data to show the latitudinal variation in daylength on Dec 21st (4)

b) What will the daylength be in Bloomington (ca 40N) on Dec 21st? (1)

c) What will the daylength be at the tropic of capricorn on Dec 21st? (1)

d) Why does daylength vary with latitude? (2)


Use Figure 1, a map of pressure of the eastern United States for March 31st 1993 to answer the following questions.

a) Draw on isobars to illustrate the spatial pattern of pressure (4)

b) Label the area of low pressure (1)

c) Calculate the pressure gradient from A-B (show all workings)
