EVOLUTION OF THE EARTH
SPRING SEMESTER 2010
|
Learning activities in lab sessions (W & R 12:20-2:15 pm, R
4:40-6:35 pm in GY210, starting week 2 on Jan. 20 and 21) include:
- Investigation of geological materials to build practical
skills in rock and fossil characterization and identification
- Interpretation of
stratigraphic sections to discern temporal relationships in rock
sequences
- Systematic assessment of spatial relationships of rocks to
develop abilities in geological
problem solving
- A field trip during the semester will focus on
examination of aspects of local geology, and the relationships
between rocks
in outcrops
Student
Responsibilities
- Preparation through review of lab resource information and
objectives
- Active involvement and engagement in ech lab exercise,
ensuring aims
understood and assignments completed, posing questions if unsure about
lab principles, tasks, or scope of answers expected
- All lab reports must be submitted via Oncourse within one
week
(i.e. prior to the next lab class), answering all questions. Written
labs are not accepted
- Attendance at
the relevant lab class is required for credit
- It may be possible for students to attend a lab section
different from their regular time due to extenuating circumstances.
However, any and all changes must be requested in writing and approved
in
advance .
Instruction, Assessment and Grading:
- The lab classes will be orchestrated and graded by the
class AIs
- Penny Meighen & Katarina Topalov
- The points available for individual questions within the
lab
exercise are given on the worksheet, including points for
additional bonus questions.
Lab
Schedule
- The pdf files listed under "Resources" provide critical
materials (i.e. background information and worksheet) for each of
the
labs. These files will be posted under "Resources" on
Oncourse (lab class section)
- Please note that there are additional handouts (labelled
supplements) for some
of
the labs that are separate from these pdf files
