Frank Kottlowski (BA '47, AM '49, PhD '51), standing, and Joe Gunnel are seen in the "Coal Center" in this 1950-51 photo provided by Gordon Grender (BS '51, AM '52).
After a long career in economic geology with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines, Kottlowski became its Director in 1974. After his death in 2001, the AAPG established the Frank Kottlowski Memorial Grant, awarded annually to a deserving graduate student. Recent recipients of the grant include Ye "Linda" Zhang in 2002 and Mirela Dumitrescu in 2003.
