B.S. Geology Major

The B.S. curriculum includes more allied science and fewer liberal arts requirements than the B.A. and is designed for students who plan professional employment or advanced study in the geological sciences.
Students must complete the following fundamental skills and distribution requirements:
- Writing, same as B.A. degree.
- Foreign language, 3 credit hours at the second-year level or competency equivalent via placement exam, reduced by one course from the B.A. requirement.
- Arts and humanities, two courses, reduced from four courses for the B.A.
- Social and historical studies, two courses, reduced from four courses for the B.A.
- Natural and mathematical sciences, fulfilled by major.
The requirements for the major are:
- Any one formal 100-level course in the geological sciences. G111, G112, or G104 is
- G221, G222, G323, G334, and G429.
- Three formal 3 or 4 credit hour geological sciences courses at the 400 level.
- Chemistry C117; C118 is recommended.
- Mathematics M211 and M212.
- Physics P221 and P222.
- Biology L111 or L112.
- Two courses at the 300 or 400 level, intended for science majors, selected from Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics. Recommendedcourses include Biology B300
or Z374; Chemistry C360 or C361; Mathematics M311 or M343; and Physics
P331 or P340. These courses must be selected from two different departments.
- One additional formal 3 credit course at the 300 or 400 level from any of the following
departments: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics, or one additional
formal 3 credit geological sciences course at the 400 level.
Students should satisfy the 100- and 200-level allied sciences and mathematics requirements at the earliest possible date.

The B.S. degree in Geological Sciences is designed to prepare students to become professional earth scientists, as well as to attend graduate school for further advanced training. We require 34 credit hours of geological science courses including field training in Montana (G429). We also require 32 hours of course work in closely related Allied Sciences and Mathematics (AS&M), including course work in each of chemistry, physics, and math. Many students elect to apply these credits toward a minor in these fields. To allow maximum flexibility and specialization within the earth sciences (e.g., environmental geology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, economic geology, petroleum geology, geophysics, paleobiology, astrobiology, planetary science), 400-level course work in Geological Sciences, and all 300 and 400 level course work in allied sciences is not specified
