Graduate students should have courses in undergraduate paleontology with a laboratory; evolution; biology, choosing from systematic zoology, genetics, or ecology/ecosystems; sedimentology and stratigraphy; geochemistry; and a field geology course. Undergraduate classes in physics, chemistry and calculus are additional prerequisites for admission. Before graduation, students are expected to write grant proposals to fund field and laboratory research, submit an abstract for a regional or national meeting, and give a formal thesis defense.
