Research Interests

Shale gas: Geochemical and physical constraints on genesis, storage, and productibility.

Project director: Arndt Schimmelmann; Co-investigators: Maria Mastalerz and Jurgen Schieber; Project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy

Project significance: a) research towards understanding porosity in shales; b) catalytic gas generation; and c) measuring methane emissions from shale outcrops. We intend to generate new data to better understand gas producibility from shales.

Geologic support of abandoned and active coal mines in Indiana for ventilation design

Project director: Maria Mastalerz; Co-investigator: Agnieszka Drobniak: Project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

Project significance: This study is conducted to evaluate ventilation systems in underground coal mines and to identify ways in which improvement of ventilation systems in relation to different methane sources can increase mine safety.

Technology options for coupled underground coal gasification and CO2 capture and storage

Project director: Jeroen Schuppers; Co-investigator: Maria Mastalerz and Agnieszka Drobniak; Project sponsored by the European Commission

The main objective of the proposed project is to develop a generic underground coal gasification – carbon capture and storage (UCG-CCS) site characterization workflow which would address the dilemma faced by the proponents of reactor zone CO2 storage and offers technological solutions to source-sink mismatch issues that are likely to be faced in many coalfields.
