Contest Description

The idea for the Earth as Art contest is based on the Earth as Art Gallery sponsored by the US Geologic Survey and NASA. It features amazing images of earth with an artistic perspective.

Participants in this annual contest are encouraged to create works of art based on satellite imagery, aerial photography, elevation data, infrared imagery, or map features from locations around the world. The geographic data can be displayed in a variety of colors - allowing for a unique and personal perspective of land and made-made features.

All current staff, faculty and students at Indiana University are eligible to apply.  If you are interested in participating, please email a UITS GIS Specialist with the following information:

    • title of your art image,
    • your department affiliation,
    • your contact information

Please see the following contest rules for all art submissions:

    • Registration deadline is Monday, November 12th
    • Art can be no larger than 4 x 4 feet.  However, size 11x17 inches is perferred for Herron School library display cases. You are responsible for printing art for submissions to the contest.
    • Art should contain (within or next to image) a title, description and citation. 
    • A high-resolution image of art must be submitted. Please do not email the image. Slashtmp or a CD can be used to transfer the data.
    • Art will be reviewed by a panel of judges.
    • Participants are responsible for retrieving art entries after the contest. The university is not responsible for returning art to participants.

The art entries will be on display at the GIS Day Event on the IU Bloomington Campus.  The winner will be announced on GIS Day.
