Policies
Cheating, conduct:
Make sure you are familiar with the IU ethics policies (cheating, conduct...).
Lab hours:
There will be a series of hours during the semester when a teaching assistant will be in the SB221 lab to help you with questions you may have about lab exercises, projects or other work. You are welcome to take advantage of this time, but you are not required to complete your labs during these scheduled lab hours. During these lab hours there will be no structured lecture content, so not attending the lab hours doesn't mean you miss out on anything except access to someone to help you with course work.
Late penalty:
All work turned in after the stated due date will be subject to late penalties. Exceptions include those relating to the IU policy on religious observances or for professional development (interviews off campus, attendance at professional meetings). Advance notice is not required for religious observances but is helpful for you and for me. To be exempt from late penalties on assignments, advance notice for absences associated with professional development is required. Exceptions beyond this policy will be granted in only the most extreme cases (e.g. death in family).
Class attendance:
Class attendance is expected. Lectures complement rather than duplicate the readings. Lecture sessions cover material that facilitates the completion of lab assignments. If a student misses a class, it is that student's responsibility to make up the work or get class notes. Lecture notes will regularly be posted to the course web page, but these notes are in outline form and not complete lecture notes. There is a class participation component to the final grade which is based on your input in class (asking insightful questions, making insightful comments). Being absence from class detracts from your ability to participate in class.
This course follows the IU policy on accomodating religious observances. You are not required to prove attendance at religious services or events to obtain an accommodation for religious observance. You are requested to provide indication of any such requests in accordance with this policy early in the semester.
Incompletes:
Per IU policy, incompletes will be granted under only the most exceptional of circumstances. Examples include a death in the family or major illness that keeps you out of the classroom for a significant period of time. Getting behind in the class due to other obligations outside the classroom (other classes, job) doesn't warrant granting an incomplete under IU policy.
Readings and lab exercises:
Do the readings before class. Readings for a particular week are expected to be completed by the Monday class period.
It is highly recommended that you start labs well before the due date.
