In the spring of 2012, a team of Math, Engineering, Technology and Science Academy (METSA) students presented their New Tech Global Issues School Project to the Framers Branch, Texas Chamber of Commerce. Combining two previously separate projects, Food2Fly and Ken-Ya Help, team METSA raised consciousness about global issues using social media and was congratulated by Commerce Director Anne Acuna on a “…professional job well done!” Photo courtesy of Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce
Mission Statement
The purpose of the "New Tech Global Issues All-School Project" is to provide an intense learning experience for New Tech students that involves international knowledge, skills, and attitudes. At the same time, the project accomplishes two New Tech Network goals: engaging students in a school-wide project and teaching them global, 21st Century skills.
Description
The project includes a school-wide, multidisciplinary course of study that takes place over one week each school year.
During project week, student teams research a global issue and develop a product (public service announcement; computer application; educational You Tube video; formal proposal to local legislators, etc.) that addresses the issue and aims to help resolve it. At the end of the week, students present their completed research and products to teachers and administrators, fellow students, and a group of judges made up of community members who have related experience.

During four years of school participation, students will have studied four global issues in depth and co-designed four related products. These experiences will afford detailed knowledge of global concerns and rich understanding of the complexities involved in addressing them.
