The purpose of Integrating International and Civic Education: An Invitation to Deliberate (IICE) is to provide professional development opportunities for teachers to learn how use deliberation to better integrate international issues in a standards-based classroom, as well as to encourage civic participation among Indiana's youth. IICE workshops have been developed to present a model of how to engage high school students in deliberation in social studies classes and encourage teachers to engage high school students in community-based activities. This model has improved high school students' critical thinking skills, increased their desire to explore international issues, and stimulated their active citizenship, in schools, communities, and as far away as Tanzania. Work continues to adapt the model and materials to middle and elementary school levels. This project was initially conducted in partnership with the Choices for the 21st Century Education Program, Watson Institute of International Studies, Brown University, and KIDS Consortium, Auburn, ME, with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
