Internationalization Collaborative Across Bloomington (ICAB)
OVERVIEW Global Center Home Page

Indiana University Bloomington and Ivy Tech Bloomington are engaged in a four-year collaboration to develop faculty learning communities that will work toward designing global learning experiences for all students.  A faculty learning community is often times a cohort of teachers from different disciplines who decide to work together on a defined project over a designated period of time with a focused purpose intended to produce measureable outcomes or products about teaching and learning. Such communities successfully engage faculty in scholarly teaching and student-centered learning as participants collaborate within a collegial atmosphere of peer review and support. Faculty learning communities can take a variety of approaches. This may include trying out teaching innovations, assessing student learning, creating new models of practice, and publishing scholarship about the work they accomplish.

The Internationalization Collaborative Across Bloomington (ICAB) brings together faculty and staff from both campuses for the cross-fertilization of ideas, pedagogies, and expertise. In order to enhance international learning on our respective campuses ICAB works to:

  • Increase awareness and interest in internationalization as an essential part of the undergraduate experience
  • Investigate and incorporate ways that internationalization can enhance teaching, learning, and assessment at IU and Ivy Tech
  • Nourish internationalization efforts on both campuses
  • Build faculty collaboration across disciplines and across campuses
  • Encourage reflective and authentic assessment practices for faculty as they become responsive to the complexities of international teaching and learning within their classrooms
  • Develop an internationalization model that will be disseminated to other institutions of higher education locally, regionally and nationally

Professional support for both faculty and staff on course and curriculum internationalization, as well as on broader comprehensive internationalization and assessment, are central to the project.  Professional development is provided by the Center for the Study of Global Change (the Global Center) and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning.  The Global Center also runs the Institute for Curriculum and Campus Internationalization (ICCI) that directly supports the work of this partnership and provides  a forum for its dissemination.

With the support and involvement of the IU Office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, the Office of the Vice President of International Affairs, and eight Title VI International Centers at Indiana University, the Offices of the Chancellor, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs at Ivy Tech, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Internationalization Collaborative Across Bloomington has far-reaching support.  This is important, as this project does not rest on a few committed individuals, but rather on a campus-wide recognition and the willingness to integrate international perspectives into teaching and learning on both campuses.   As campus-to-campus initiatives, this unique partnership between a major research university and a large community college will help better prepare students for employment and lives in this interconnected 21st century.
