History

Since 1996, the Center for the Study of Global Change and the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs have offered summer institutes, including the two-week residential International Studies Summer Institute (ISSI) for Middle and High School Teachers.

Participants to ISSI have enjoyed a wide range of activities, including interactive video links to England, Poland, South Africa, the Republic of Georgia, Namibia, and many other places.  Participants have also participated in simulation exercises, small group activities, and global education seminars.  In addition, participants enjoyed cultural events around Bloomington.

Speakers to ISSI have included:

  • Air Marshall Timothy Garden, Baron Garden
  • Dr. Amos Sawyer (former President of Liberia)
  • Ambassador Dr. Feisal Amin Al-Istrabadi (former Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations)
  • Dr. Philippe Moreau Defarges (Plenipotentiary Minister; Senior Research Fellow, French Institute of International relations; Professor, Institut d’Etudes Politiques & University of Paris Il Pantheon-Assas, Paris, France)
  • Senator Richard Lugar (Republican Senator, Indiana)
  • Frances Moore Lappé (co-founder, Small Planet Institute; 2008 recipient of the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award)
