Scott Sernau's research interests include globalization, inequality and community development. These also motivate his teaching interests, including an emphasis on active learning, global education and service learning. He is active with international programs on campus and across the state, and has worked with programs in Mexico, Costa Rica and France. Service learning interests have led to work with Indiana Campus Compact, Educators for Community Engagement and the International Partnership for Service Learning. He has been quite involved with FACET, the IU teaching and learning consortium, and its sponsored activities on campus. He taught on Semester at Sea global voyages in 2005 and 2011.
He enjoys travel and learning about new places, both urban and remote, as well as multicultural music and food (although strictly as a consumer in both cases). When planted in South Bend, he is usually involved in a book project of one sort or another. Visitors to his office often comment on his eclectic collection of books and crafts, and a parked bicycle, his preferred means of transport.
