James J. Biles is an Assistant Professor in the Geography Department at Indiana University, where he also holds a joint appointment in International Studies. A native of Philadelphia, he earned his undergraduate degree in Urban and Environmental Studies at Ohio University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economic Geography at Michigan State University. Biles' research interests focus on the confluence of globalization, livelihoods and informality, particularly in southern Mexico. His recent research explores the local impacts and unintended consequences of neoliberalism and globalization, specifically changes in access to credit in southern Mexico as a result of increasing integration in financial services and the impacts of the globalization of retailing, known as walmartization, on the organization of supply networks and the livelihoods of small-scale agricultural producers. Biles recent research has appeared in Growth and Change, The Review of Regional Studies, The Industrial Geographer, Regional Studies, the Journal of Latin American Geography, Geography Compass and The Professional Geographer.
