Mary Embry is interested in global sustainability issues in the retail industry. She works within the Fair Trade movement, particularly attentive to handicraft industries in resource poor areas as a means of economic empowerment and sustainable production. In 2004 she began a Fair Trade advocacy non-profit, Fair Trade Bloomington, which worked collaboratively in 2009 with students and Global Gifts, Inc. to open a Fair Trade retail store and in 2013 certified Bloomington as a Fair Trade Town. As a Board member of the Fair Trade Resource Network, she influences educational programs in the United States Fair Trade movement. She has traveled to the Dominican Republic, Uganda, Kenya, China, and Ecuador to work directly with Fair Trade artisans. Currently she is designing product development service-learning experiences in collaboration with small-scale artisans in Ecuador. Her teaching incorporates interdisciplinary learning and internationalized curriculum, with servant leadership mindsets. She has been an Internationalization Collaborative Across Bloomington Fellow and recognized with the Beth Wood Distinguished Service-Learning Faculty Award.
