Katherine Wiley is the Program Coordinator for the International Outreach Council at IUB where she manages the International Studies In Schools and Global Speakers Service Programs. She is also a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology at IUB, with a minor in African Studies. Her research focuses on the Haratine (ex-slaves or descendants of slaves) in Mauritania, asking how their social status is shifting and how they are understanding their places in society. She particularly looks at women's economic practices, asking how they impact women's understandings of gender, status, race, and ethnicity. Katherine has also served in the Peace Corps in Mauritania and has worked on the Caribbean team at the International Training and Education Center for Health (ITECH). She is currently teaching the class "Contemporary Africa" at Franklin College.
