We invite you and your colleagues to attend an upcoming workshop on the media and Islam. The media has the power to shape perceptions of as well as reinforce long-held stereotypes about particular cultures and religions. One religion getting a lot of coverage of late is Islam and the Voices and Visions Project is organizing a workshop exploring the faith and the media’s coverage of it.
Uncovering Islam: Representing, Reporting, and Responsibilities will not only introduce media professionals, students and scholars to the practices of Muslims and the religion of Islam but also to the diversity within the faith. On the practical side of things, the workshop will also focus on the roles and responsibilities of the media in the representation of Muslims and Islam. |

To create an open dialogue about these issues, workshop participants will hear from and be able to ask questions of Muslims, scholars and working journalists. Included among the presenters is the Director of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana’s Women’s Fund Rafia Zakaria, Bloomington Islamic Center President Faiz Rahman, "Islamophobia: Making Muslims the Enemy" authors Peter Gottschalk and Gabriel Greenberg, Indianapolis Star religion reporter Robert King, National Geographic Magazine staff photographer Steve Raymer, and NPR’s Jamie Tarabay. Tarabay served for a time as the network’s Baghdad Bureau Chief and is now working on a series of reports about Muslims in America.
