DUNN MEADOW -- Backyard football is more than just a summertime activity, it’s a part of the lifeblood of America. Today, backyard football was shamed. There was to be a showdown between the Baker and the Hieftje research groups at high noon (1 p.m. DST).
With Team Hieftje out in full-force and warming up to meet the challenge put forth by Team Baker, a sole Baker group member (Celeste) approached Dunn Meadow field. It was disgraceful news that she brought. She alone was willing to represent her research group in the contest they had initiated. Therefore, Team Baker was forced to forfeit.
While Team Hieftje was frustrated and disgusted by this turn of events, the game must go on. Four players from Team Hieftje willingly joined the Baker squad resulting in a five-on-five contest of touch football. When all was said and done, Team Hieftje prevailed, 35 – 7.
In a post-game interview, Kevin said, “All I have to say is that was a wonderful game. I have no hard feelings toward the Baker research group or even Team Baker. Everyone played great!”
In this modest reporter’s opinion, Kevin’s sentiments embody the spirit of backyard football. Through the spectacular showing put forth by both the Hieftje Group members and the others playing, the meaning of the game was restored.
