Yan Cheung is originally from Hong Kong, China and came to the the US in 2000 for undergraduate studies. She graduated with a B.S. in biochemistry from California State University East Bay in 2005 and was then employed by Chevron Inc. in Richmond, CA as a research assistant for 5 years. Yan's work in Chevron included sample digestion and elemental analysis using various analytical methods (ICP-AES for metal analysis, combustion methods for Nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen and sulfur analysis, etc.). She then took a leave-of-absent from her position and joined Professor Hieftje's group in September 2010. Yan is currently working on fundamental studies on matrix effect with organic solvents in ICP-AES axial view.
