GPSG is dedicated to advocating on behalf of IU’s diverse student population. Below are diversity resources for incoming and current IU graduate and professional students.
Bias Incident Reports
GPSG alongside Indiana University encourages all graduate and professional students to report experiences of bias-based treatment on campus. A bias-based incident is any act of discrimination or harassment based on:
- Gender Identity
- Sexual Orientation
The purpose of reporting bias incidents is to (1) To document bias-based incidents on campus in order to better understand the reality of discrimination in the IU community and (2) To assist and help provide resolution to bias-based incidents for those who request a response.
- Disability Support Services (DSS): The DSS specializes in assisting students with various disabilities including physical, psychological, learning, neurological, medical, vision, hearing, and temporary impairments to achieve their academic goals.
- Division of Student Affairs: The Division of Student Affairs and Dean of Students’ website outline many initiatives in support of diverse students at IU such as Culture of Care, Gender and Women’s Affairs, and the Commission on Multicultural Understanding (COMU).
- Graduate Mentoring Center: The Graduate Mentoring Center works to develop an intentional community of graduate scholars who are culturally diverse and competent, mindful, and who consistently produce innovative research and creative works that have viable and sustainable impact on their communities.
- Office of International Services (OIS): OIS is dedicated to helping international students with applying to IU, admissions standards, supporting documents (including visas), financial documentation, and planning international student arrival.
- Office of Student Legal Services: All IU Bloomington students are entitled to free, confidential legal help through IU’s Student Legal Services (SLS). SLS helps students with landlord issues, divorces, green cards, and more.
- Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (OVPDEMA): OVPDEMA serves as an advocate to replace obstacles with opportunities, so that minority and underrepresented students, faculty, and staff find a sense of belonging at IU.
- Veterans Support Services: Veteran Support Services helps U.S.A. Veterans use their Veteran Education Benefits and ease their transition from the military to campus life.
IU Culture Centers and Institutes
- African American Arts Institute: The African American Arts Institute preserves and promotes African American culture through performance, education, creative activity, research, and outreach.
- Asian Culture Center: The Asian Culture Center promotes awareness and understanding of Asian and Asian American cultures, histories, and issues through institutional resources, educational support, and community outreach.
- First Nations Educational and Culture Center: The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center supports the retention and recruitment of American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian students, faculty, and staff.
- LGBTQ+ Culture Center: LGBTQ+ Culture Center celebrates sexual and gender diversity on a campus rated one of the friendliest in the United States for queer students and their friends and supporters.
- La Casa Latino Cultural Center: The La Casa Latino Cultural Center promotes academic excellence, personal and professional growth, and greater historical, political, and cultural awareness of the Latino community through educational and social programs.
- Neal Marshall Black Culture Center: The Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center connects IU to Black culture, promotes public awareness of the Black experience, and celebrates students’ academic and leadership achievements.
IU Student Groups
Many student-led groups and organizations on campus are dedicated to advocating on behalf of diversity at Indiana Bloomington. A few are highlighted below, but a full searchable list of the 160+ International, Cultural, and Diversity Organizations at IU can be found at BeInvolved.
- Asian American Association (AAA): The AAA promotes maintaining community among AAPI individuals, active awareness on AAPI issues on campus, and understanding and bridging gaps among AAPI individuals at Indiana University.
- Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA): BGSA is an organization dedicated to the academic, political, and social well-being of African American graduate and professional students.
- GPSG Diversity Committee and Diversity Council: The GPSG Diversity Committee addresses issues related to diversity and underrepresented graduate student populations at Indiana University alongside the five-member Diversity Council.
- GradQueers (GQ): GradQueers aims to promote tolerance, visibility, and equality within Indiana University Bloomington on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community and to foster social relationships, productive discourse, and education on issues relevant to graduate students.
- Latinos Unidos at Indiana University (Latinos Unidos): Latinos Unidos at IU Promotes the identity and unity of the Latino students through intellectual, cultural, and social growth to increase their visibility and involvement in campus and community activities.
- Scholars Without Borders: Scholars Without Borders is an organization dedicated to cross-cultural understanding and networking for students regardless of their academic, cultural, or social backgrounds.
- The Society for Inter-Cultural Understanding (SICU): SICU’s mission is to provide an open and friendly forum for international and domestic students to interact.
- UndocuHoosiers Alliance Bloomington: UndocuHoosier Alliance works to serve the needs of undocumented people at Indiana University and the community at large. These needs include a) providing or directing undocumented students to academic, financial, and legal resources, b) raising awareness of undocumented issues on campus and in our state, c) engagement in civic responsibilities that uplift the campus, local, and national undocumented community, and d) providing undocumented students with leadership and advocacy opportunities.
- Women in Science at Indiana University (WinS@IU): WinS@IU is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, researchers, faculty, staff, and Bloomington community members across a range of scientific fields (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, SPEA, etc.) and seeks to provide networking, resources, and mentoring women in scientific fields.
