The Swahili Flagship Center (swahili.indiana.edu) in the Department of Linguistics is offering graduate assistant positions for the coming 2011/2012 academic year. The Swahili Flagship Center is a program designed for undergraduate Swahili language learners to achieve a superior proficiency while pursuing degrees in the academic major of their choice. Applications from Masters or PhD level students (at any point in the course of their studies) are now being accepted for the position of Graduate Assistant. This position serves a multifaceted role in Swahili Flagship Center activities. Please read qualifications carefully to see that all criteria are met.
In this position graduate assistants are assigned to a variety of duties and tasks at the Swahili Flagship Center. Most duties will focus on working with Center staff to assist in undergraduate recruitment; language material development, mentoring/ assisting elementary, intermediate, and advanced Swahili students; organizing Center events and actives; and other duties as needed. Graduate Assistant positions are semester long appointments which may be renewed contingent upon funding. Positions are 20-hour per week (50% FTE); compensation includes fee remission for 12, excluding non-remittable fees; subsidized Student Academic Appointee Mandatory Health Insurance and a stipend.
Candidates may be from any graduate program in any department or professional school at Indiana University, with preference given to students in programs pursuing the study of East African language, culture, history, etc. Must be able to demonstrate advanced Swahili reading, writing, and speaking skills through an interview and writing sample. Candidates must be enrolled full-time as an IUB graduate or professional student. NOTE: Graduate Assistants may not concurrently hold positions as Associate Instructors, Graduate/Research Assistants, or be committed to other full- or half-time work.
