The mission of the Groups Scholars Program Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Initiative is to promote and enhance the academic and professional experiences of first- generation, underrepresented students in the STEM disciplines through research, structured mentoring, and academic support. The STEM Initiative was created to prepare and advance students as research scientists, research physicians, and professionals in the public health fields.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: STEM coordinator with a strong passion working with advanced undergraduate students in STEM disciplines seeking an Research Workshop Coordinator for summer Groups STEM program.

Coordinator will develop, coordinate, implement and participate in research workshops that help Groups STEM participants understand and apply the research process to their summer projects; represent the Groups program and/or STEM initiative at the Poster Symposium in late July; serve as the advisor for the Groups STEM student organization; and assist the STEM team with the management and implementation of the initiative’s functions.

–A minimum summer (May 11-August 8 2014) plus two-semester commitment is requested –GA hours will be discussed and can possibly be adjusted and flexible, not to exceed 20 hours/week. –Opportunities include: contribute to strategic plan of advancing the Groups STEM Initiative, active involvement with student development process, and enhance teaching and curriculum development skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Research workshops 

 Prepare and develop workshop materials for 4 weekly workshops

 Lead 4 two hour workshops that focus on different elements of the research process.

 Create interactive workshops that actively engage participants.

 Develop evaluative tool

 

STEM planning Team 

 Participate in weekly STEM planning team meetings

 Contribute to functions of the STEM initiative including, but not limited to program planning, marketing strategies, resource development, and program evaluation

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree and be currently enrolled in or received admission to an Indiana University Graduate Program on the Bloomington campus. Student should be organized, responsible, and dependable and have the ability to work independently; possess analytical problem solving and decision making skills; and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population.

Must possess strong interpersonal skills an ability to actively engage students in the learning process. Strong writing, editing and research skills are required. Knowledge and proficiency of technological tools preferred.

COMPENSATION: 

Summer stipend of $2500. All applicants are asked to apply for Federal Work-Study. Offers contingent upon approval.

Number of Assistantships Available for summer 2014: 1 – 13 month appointment
