(IUB) Eskenazi Museum of Art GA: Retail Operations

The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art—Indiana University’s treasury for the art of the world—is a preeminent teaching museum, providing exceptional opportunities for all to engage with the visual arts. Our graduate assistant program supports a team of Indiana University students from a variety of disciplines who work collaboratively with Eskenazi Museum of Art mentors on individual and shared projects that realize institutional gains and advance student learning goals.

Through regularly scheduled, collaborative learning meetings, our program provides opportunities for graduate assistants, other Eskenazi Museum of Art apprentices, and museum personnel to engage as a community of scholars, learning together in ways that support our current work and our future scholarship and career goals.

Graduate Assistant: Retail Operations

The Retail Operations Graduate Assistant will assistant in coordinating the day-to-day operations for the newly renovated Eskenazi Museum of Art café and gift shop. Working with the Product Development and Visual Merchandising Graduate Assistant, the Director of Administration, and the Director of Creative Services, the position will

  • coordinate gift shop operations to achieve financial and branding objectives in alignment with the broader Eskenazi Museum of Art vision, with primary focuses on customer service and retail best practices.
  • serve as a member of the museum’s product development team, offering creative feedback and suggestions.
  • aid in coordinating part-time sales staff and will provide point of sale support.
  • support the execution of the gift shop’s sales and operations, providing the highest level of guest experience to ensure a welcoming environment.
  • will act as an ambassador for the museum, maintaining current knowledge of the museum’s collection, exhibitions, and education programs, and how they relate to merchandise.
  • proactively anticipating and addressing guests’ needs, responding to requests and addressing complaints.
  • (with support from the University Experiences Manager) research and facilitate a project that explores audience engagement with the café.

Qualifications

IU graduate student enrolled full time for the 2019–20 academic year. In-state residency is required.

  • Previous retail sales experience is preferred
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and the effectively perform under time constraints
  • Superb organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of social intelligence and comfort level in dealing with a wide range of constituents, including museum staff, students, university faculty and staff, donors, and the general public
  • Interest in people, art, books, and fashion highly preferred
  • Must have open availability for a flexible work schedule that meets the needs of the business, including evenings, holidays and weekends
  • Comfort with budgets and financial reporting is preferred

Compensation

Includes a stipend, fee remission (in-state residency required), and enrollment in IU’s student appointee medical and dental plans.
