Call for Course Proposals! Collins Living-Learning Center

Dear departmental chairs/faculty/staff and program directors:

Collins is accepting course proposals for fall 2015. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced graduate students (and faculty) to explore teaching a topic that is of interest to them and possibly related to their area of research/study. In addition to the usual seminars offered under the CLLC heading (and generally taught by graduates students), Collins would also like to invite interested faculty to experiment with new offerings at Collins. These courses will be offered under the faculty member’s own department course heading, but be held at Collins and follow the usual Collins format (21 maximum students and satisfying the Collins freshman and sophomore residency requirement).

Please share the attached pdf file with advanced graduate students and faculty in your department. This can also be printed as a flier to place within your department or academic program.

Please note that there is an open house on Friday, September 26 from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Edmondson Hall formal lounge where prospective instructors can meet members of our Board of Educational Programming.

SAA Opening: Evaluating & Improving Financial Literacy among Graduate Students (CLOSES 28 AUG)

University Human Resources is seeking a Graduate Assistant to conduct a one year research and analysis project related to evaluating and improving the level of financial literacy of IU’s graduate students.

This project is funded by the TIAA-CREF Institute and the target audience would be approximately 8,000 graduate students across Indiana University.  Suggested research will involve measuring and analyzing financial literacy results from education as well as the impact of framing the concept of lifetime savings for a sample of the group. This project may include a cross-disciplinary approach with TIAA-CREF Institute fellows from other Institutions including Ohio State University.

Successful candidates will have previous project management experience; possess strong organizational skills; and have previous experience with databases such as Excel or Access. Applicants should have previous survey experience (prefer experience with Qualtrics survey tool); understanding of basic research design experience; and currently pursuing a graduate degree at Indiana University. The expectation is that this position will work 15-20 hours per week; remuneration includes a $1,167 monthly stipend and health insurance. This position reports to the University Director, Retirement Program Services.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) (various October/November deadlines by field)

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) application period is now open! NSF is soliciting applications for the GRFP until the posted deadlines in late October and early November 2014. Since 1952, GRFP has provided Fellowships to individuals selected early in their graduate careers based on their demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering. Three years of support is provided by the program for graduate study in science or engineering and leads to a research-based master’s or doctoral degree. CAHI Dissertation of MFA Thesis Research Travel Awards (due 5 SEPT 2014)

Eligibility: Any Ph.D. student in the arts and humanities (in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University) who has completed all course work, been advanced to candidacy, and who is at work on the dissertation. MFA students must be within one year of completing their thesis work. Students must be enrolled at IU in order to apply for and receive award funding.

Requirements and Criteria

Applications must consist of:

  • a short vita;
  • a short research statement, outlining the research to be done, and the necessity of the travel (no more than 750 words);
  • a budget outlining expected costs;
  • a letter of support from a faculty advisor;
  • documentation that there are no outstanding charges on student’s bursar account.

Materials should be sent in electronic form to cahi@indiana.edu. Letters of support can come separately, if that is desired, but should also be sent to cahi@indiana.edu.

Awards may be up to $2000.

Eligibility: Any Ph.D. or MFA student in the arts and humanities (in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University) may apply. Students must be enrolled at IU in order to apply for and receive award funding.

Requirements and Criteria

Applications must consist of:

  • a short vita;
  • documentation that the student has had a paper accepted for the conference;
  • a brief abstract (no more than 200 words) of the paper to be given;
  • a letter of support, from a faculty advisor or the departmental DGS;
  • documentation that there are no outstanding charges on student’s bursar account.

Materials should be sent in electronic form to cahi@indiana.edu. Letters of support can come separately, if that is desired, but should also be sent to cahi@indiana.edu.

Awards may be up to $1000.

Recipients must wait an academic year before reapplying.

IU President’s Diversity Scholars Program Application (DUE 26 Sept 2014)

The University Graduate School is pleased to announce the President’s Diversity Doctoral Scholars Program at Indiana University

More than one-third of America’s college students are people of color. However, the percentages of college and university faculty who are members of racial/ethnic minority groups are only small fractions of the total. Nationwide, approximately five percent of faculty are African-American, roughly three percent are Hispanic and about one percent are Native American. Indiana University and the Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholars Program are working to change this.

The President’s Diversity Doctoral Scholars Program (DSP) goal is to prepare more minority Ph.D. students who seek careers as college faculty. DSP provides multiple layers of support including career counseling, job postings, counseling and advocacy, a scholar directory for networking and recruiting, invitation to attend the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring and early career support for pre-candidacy doctoral students. Ph.D. students who: apply to, are selected for, and accept the DSP Doctoral Award will receive an invitation to attend the institute up to three years, whereas Ph.D. students who: apply to, are selected for and accept the DSP Dissertation Award will be invited to attend the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring for one year.

To apply, complete the attached application by the September 26, 2014 deadline.

AI-ship Hudson & Holland Scholars Program CLOSES this Thurs 7 Aug

Associate Instructor for EDUC-U212 Current Issues in Undergraduate Education for Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (HHSP)

The School of Education is looking for one (1) Associate Instructor (AI) who is interested in working with traditionally underrepresented freshmen students who have been accepted to Indiana University through the Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (http://www.indiana.edu/~hhsp/ ).  The course is taught and coordinated by Dean Gerardo Gonzalez and Connie Skinner, who serves a co-lead instructor.  There are two additional AI positions that help facilitate the lectures and discussion sections.

The course is designed to challenge students to think deeply about themselves and their role as learners; develop critical cognitive, study and communication skills necessary for academic success; and engage in personal, academic and career exploration strategies leading to clear plans for success at IU and beyond.  Each AI is responsible for contributing to lecture topics and design, leading two discussion sections of 24-30 students each, mentoring one or two undergraduate teaching assistants, grading, providing timely feedback on major assignments, and holding office hours on the Bloomington campus.  AIs are expected to be knowledgeable of issues surrounding undergraduate life at a large American research university, critical reading and writing skills, and college student development.  Teaching experience is highly desirable.

The position holds a 10-month, .45 FTE appointment for both Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters.  Lectures are Tuesday mornings from 8-9:15a and discussion sections are scheduled on Thursdays from 8-9:15a, 9:30a-10:45a, 11:15a-12:30p, and 1-2:15p.  AIs must attend all the lecture sessions and meet with their two assigned discussion sections each week.  In addition, the AIs are also required to attend a weekly instructional staff meeting (Tuesdays, time TBA) and to enroll in a one credit course EDUC-C675 Supervised College Teaching under Dean Gonzalez.  The position includes a monthly stipend, graduate credit fee remission, and graduate student insurance with benefits.
