UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

AYMARA LANGUAGE PROGRAM

SUMMER 2003

The Center for Latin American Studies at University of Chicago announces a three-course intensive sequence in Aymara for Summer 2003. This is the only course in Aymara offered in the US.  The 9-week intensive beginnerÕs course, supported by the US Department of Education, has been offered biennially since 1995 under the development of course instructor Miguel Huanca.  Aymara is an indigenous language of the Andes, spoken widely in Bolivia and parts of Peru, Chile and Argentina. Using a variety of authentic cultural materials, including film, literature, music, visual and mass media, along with the text Aymar Arux Akhamawa and its accompanying CD-ROM dialogues, students acquire proficiency in formal language structures, conversation, aural, written skills, and grammar. At the same time, students incorporate particular meanings imbedded within indigenous Aymara cultural concepts and contexts.  The course is appropriate for masterÕs, doctoral, and advanced undergraduate students, particularly, though not exclusively, those in the fields of Andean anthropology and history, as well as students pursuing a concentration in linguistics.

Costs and Funding Opportunities: The course is approved for the Department of Education FLAS/Title VI Fellowship Program. Students must apply for FLAS funding through their home institution. Students from eligible institutions are strongly encouraged to apply concurrently for FLAS fellowships along with FLEP (Foreign  Language Enhancement Program) and CIC funding, the latter relevant to the ŌBig TenĶ universities participating in the Consortium on Institutional CooperationÕs Traveling Scholars Program.   (Note:  IUÕs CIC Traveling Scholar Program contact is Jody Smith, University Graduate School--IUB, josmith@indiana.edu, 812-855-4010.)
