Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI)

Dear Southeast Asian Studies Faculty and Students,

January is the month for applications and I would like to make sure that you are aware of six excellent summer programs for Southeast Asian languages with application deadlines around the end of January. The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison teaches elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels of the following Southeast Asian languages: Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese. Students get one year of credit for the intensive summer course.

Several scholarship opportunities are available. See the SEASSI website at: http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/seassi/

Graduate students at CIC consortium member universities are eligible to compete for travel money to attend SEASSI through CIC's Foreign Language Enhancement Program. The CIC Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP) provides scholarships to help graduate students take advantage of language offerings not available at their home university, but available at another CIC member university. Scholarships are intended to cover living expenses incurred while attending another CIC host institution during the summer session. For information and application materials about FLEP funding, check the website: http://www.cic.uiuc.edu/programs/FLEP/

Four of the following advanced language programs in Southeast Asia also have excellent scholarship opportunities including airfare to Southeast Asia and all expenses for the programs. Please see their respective websites for more information:

Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay (COTIM) (program in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia)

Consortium for Advanced Study of Thai (CAST) (program in Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute (VASI) (program in Hanoi, Vietnam)

Advanced Filipino Abroad Program (AFAP) (program in Manila, Philippines)

Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Program (program in Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
