Wells Graduate FellowshipThe Wells Graduate Fellowship, named after Herman B. Wells, is a new graduate fellowship being offered by the University Graduate School. The fellowship carries a stipend of $15000 plus tuition and health insuranceand will be awarded to a student "who demonstrate[s] the qualities for which Chancellor Wells was renowned: leadership abilities, academic excellence, character, social consciousness, and generosity of spirit." Like the Edwards Fellowship, then, social concern and character seem to play at least as big a role as more traditional markers of academic excellence. At least one will be granted per year, but possibly more than one. Each department can nominate one student (Ph.D or MFA) by the deadline of Feb. 15, 2003. The nominee must be at least in the second year of graduate study at IU and a regularly enrolled student during the exam year (those admitted to Ph.D candidacy are also eligible). An application is fairly simple, consisting of an application form (available from Rochelle Picou in the Graduate School—rpicou@indiana.com or 856-4555) and a letter of nomination (at least 2 pages) from the Chair or someone the chair designates to write the letter. Supporting documentation can be included with the letter. |
