Council for European Studies 2003-04 Fellowships

The Council for European Studies is pleased to announce the 2003-04 fellowships. The eligibility is limited to doctoral candidates whose home institutions are current members of the Council. Indiana University is a member of the Council. Please note that the fellowships for research in Portugal may be used for either pre-dissertation or dissertation research, and the anthropology fellowships do not require US citizenship.

The Luso-American Development Foundation Fellowships for Research in Portugal

The Council will award two $4,000 fellowships to support doctoral research in Portugal in the social sciences and humanities, including the study of Portugal in comparative perspective. Preference may be given to pre-dissertation candidates who seek support to explore the viability of a projected doctoral dissertation, determine the availability of archival materials, and contact Portuguese scholars in the relevant field.

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates with U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. Pre-dissertation candidates should have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research. The fellowship is also open to advanced doctoral candidates who have passed their prospectus and need to return to Portugal to conduct further research.

The Florence Gould Foundation Pre-Dissertation Fellowships for Research in France

The Council will award six $4,000 fellowships for research in France in the social sciences or humanities. Recipients will test the research design of their dissertation, determine the availability of archival materials, and contact French scholars in the relevant field. Recipients will also receive a stipend to attend the next Conference of Europeanists to present their research.

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates with U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status who have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research.

German Marshall Fund Pre-Dissertation Fellowships for Research in Europe

The Council will award three $4,000 fellowships to support short-term (two to three months) independent research in Europe for the purpose of testing the feasibility and research design of a projected doctoral dissertation in the social sciences or humanities. The geographic scope of the program includes Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, including Russia and Turkey as they relate to Europe. Recipients will test the research design of their dissertation, determine the availability of archival material, and contact European scholars in the relevant field. Recipients will also receive a stipend to attend the next Conference of Europeanists to present their research.

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates who have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, and have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research.

CES/ Society for the Anthropology of Europe Pre-Dissertation Fellowship

The Council will award one $4,000 fellowship to support short-term (two to three months) independent research in Europe for the purpose of testing the feasibility and research design of a projected doctoral dissertation in the social/cultural anthropology of contemporary Europe. A committee appointed jointly by the Society for the Anthropology of Europe and the Council for European Studies will review proposals. The grantee will be expected to send a report to both organizations.

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates who have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is not a requirement for eligibility for this fellowship.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Pre-Dissertation Fellowships for Research in Europe

The Council will award four $4,000 fellowship support short-term (two to three months) independent research in Europe for the purpose of testing the feasibility and research design of a projected doctoral dissertation in the social sciences or humanities. The geographic scope of the program includes Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, including Russia and Turkey as they relate to Europe. Recipients will also receive a stipend to attend the next Conference of Europeanists to present their research.

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates with U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, and who have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research.
