John T. Slattery Named New Dean of Graduate Studies

John T. Slattery will succeed Dean George Walker as Dean of the Graduate School on November 1, 2003. Dean Slattery's office will be in the Graduate School in Kirkwood Hall 111.

The full IDS newspaper story reports that Slattery earned his Ph.D. in pharmaceutics from SUNY Buffalo, and has served as associate dean at the University of Washington for the past five years.

Associates praised Slattery's ability to "bridge his knowledge with all aspects of the graduate school, which run the gamut from arts and humanities to social and physical sciences" (IDS 09/18/2003).

Slattery has been responsible for graduate program review and also worked with a faculty graduate school council in his previous job. As associate dean at Washington, Slattery also worked with faculty and students to develop closer relationships with two satellite campuses.

At IU, he will act as the administrative and academic leader of the Graduate School, overseeing research and scholarship across eight IU campuses. He will report to IU Vice President for Research Michael McRobbie, who commented that Slattery will "bring to bear the nation's best practices in graduate education... He will represent the University's graduate programs to external audiences and funding sources in ways that bring benefit to students and programs" (IDS 09/18/2003).

At Washington, Slattery taught graduate level courses dealing with oncology, pathophysiology and drug metabolism. His wife is a math teacher. The IDS reports that Dean Slattery "likes to be involved not only in the university's educational opportunities, but also those in the community" (IDS 09/18/2003). Dean Slattery apparently also enjoys sailing. We wish him a smooth transition to Bloomington and the Graduate School at Indiana University!
