The National Science Foundation welcomes applications to the Summer Institute in Korea from all qualified graduate students in those branches of science and engineering that are normally eligible for NSF support. NSF strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to compete fully for these positions. Funding for special assistance or equipment will be provided to enable persons with disabilities to accept these awards.

The Summer Institute provides U.S. graduate students in science and engineering first-hand experience in a Korean research environment, Korean language training, and an introduction to the science and science-policy infrastructure of Korea. The goals of the institute are to introduce U.S. graduate students to Korean science and engineering in the context of a research laboratory and to initiate personal relationships which will better enable the students to collaborate with Korean counterparts in the future. The program will last for approximately eight weeks, mid-June to early August, each year. Participants will be assigned to laboratories mainly in one of three locations: Seoul, Daeduk Science Town (a suburb of Taejon), or Pohang.

The NSF will pay travel costs to and from Korea and allowance of $2000 for each participant. KOSEF will provide living accommodations as well as allowances for food and professional travel within Korea, and logistical support.
