The Air Force Office of Scientific Research is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for faculty and graduate students who work in technical disciplines. AFOSR is currently seeking dedicated academic scientists and engineers in a spectrum of technical fields to participate in eight to twelve weeks of paid research this summer. Candidates who are selected to participate will be assigned to one of six Air Force laboratories or five Air Logistics Centers throughout the country, where they will joine with their Air Force colleagues to conduct key research on technologies that are pivotal to our nation's defense. The 1997 program will take place between May 15 and September 30, 1997. Following the conclusion of the Summer Research Program, AFOSR also offers selected participants an opportunity to pursue their AFOSR-sponsored work at their own academic institutions through the award of follow-on research grants (the Summer Research Extension Program) in amounts up to $25,000.

The National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta will award 15 $3,000 fellowships for graduate study for the 1997-98 academic year. Any member of Alpha Lambda Delta who graduated with a 3.5 average is eligible to apply. Graduating seniors may apply if they have achieved this average to the end of the first semester of this year. Student Research Fellowships are intended to encourage dental students living in the United States to consider careers in oral health research. Proposals are sought in basic and clinical research related to oral health. Each Fellowship will consist of a stipend of $2,100 and each preceptor will receive an award of $300 for supplies. Upon completion of the research (must be completed within two years), acceptance of an abstract, and submission of a find report, each recipient will be awarded funds ($600) for transportation and accommodations to an Association meeting to present research results. Students must be enrolled in an accredited DDS/DMD or hygiene program in a U.S. dental (health associated) institution and must be sponsored by a faculty member at that institution. The AAUW Educational Foundation offers Career Development Grants for women who are in the early stages of graduate studies in order to re-enter the work force, change careers, or advance their current careers. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have earned a bachelor's degree, and have received their last degree before June 30, 1992. They must pursue course work at a fully accredited two- or four-year college or university or at a technical school licensed, accredited, or approved by the Federal Veterans Administration. Applicants must also enroll in courses that are prerequisites for professional employment plans. Doctoral candidates may seek funding for course work only, not for researching or writing their dissertations. Candidates eligible for another AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship or grant program are not eligible for Career Development Grants. Special consideration is given to qualified AAUW members, women of color, women pursuing their first terminal degree, and women pursuing degrees in nontraditional fields. Proposals dealing with Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and the former Yugoslavia are particularly encouraged. All proposals should be for scholarly work, the product of which is to be disseminated in English. Predissertation Travel Grants are for students who are beginning to formulate a research program for a dissertation on East Europe but lack the necessary field experience. These predissertation grants are intended to help such students define and shape the dissertation proposal and possibly begin their research by providing travel, maintenance, and research support for an investigatory trip to East Europe. The American Digestive Health Foundation (ADHF) was established by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) to advance digestive health through support of research and education in the causes, prevention, treatment, and cure of digestive diseases. (The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases recently joined the ADHF.) This prize is for the best abstract by a student or medical resident submitted for presentation at the AGA Annual Meeting during Digestive Disease Week. A travel allowance to attend the meeting to present the abstract will be provided, along with an award certificate, an honorarium, and publication of the abstract in Gastroenterology. The objective of the Prize is to stimulate interest in research through competition and recognition and to provide travel support to enable students to present the results of their research at the AGA Annual Meeting. Any high school, medical, premedical, predoctoral student, or medical resident who has performed original research related to gastroenterology is eligible for this competition. For this award, applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration for the prize. The winner of this competition will receive all reasonable expenses for a trip to the AGA Annual Meeting to present the abstract; a certificate plus a $500 honorarium; and publication of the abstract in Gastroenterology. The next five runners-up will receive travel support to attend the meeting, up to $1,000 each. Other selected runners-up will receive up to $500 in travel support. All support will be in the form of reimbursement after submission of receipts to the ADHF National Office. Students must submit abstracts prepared on AGA abstract forms, and a completed application form, and they must have a sponsor who is a member of any of the ADHF member organizations. All abstracts of those selected for the prize or for other support (e.g., runners-up) will be published in the program without charge. Up to 33 awards are available under this competition. Applicants must be sponsored by an individual member of any of the ADHF member organizations and have performed the research with the sponsor.

Up to seven scholarships of $4,000 will be awarded in 1997 for students to undertake an eight- to twelve-week, full time research project on any subject in the field of geriatric pharmacology. The subject may be drawn from the basic, clinical, behavioral, or health services sciences. The research project must be conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor. It may be carried out in any setting (i.e., medical school, hospital, university, pharmaceutical company, nursing home, government, or non-government agency). There may also be an opportunity for participants to present a poster at the May 1998 joint annual meeting of the American Geriatrics Society and the American Federation for Aging Research. The fellow will have the opportunity to use the documentary resources of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and may also spend the fellowship in residence at the NASA headquarters or one of the NASA centers. These grants provide financial assistance to enable predoctoral and recent postdoctoral investigators to study any of the scientific collections at the American Museum. These collections represent the fields of vertebrate zoology, invertebrate zoology, paleozoology, anthropology, and mineral sciences. The awards partially support travel and subsistence; visits are arranged through and approved by the appropriate scientific department of the museum and are expected to be four days or longer in duration. Applicants should first contact the staff to discuss the feasibility of the proposed visit prior to requesting the special application form. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. Only one collection study grant will be awarded to an individual. Grants are not available to investigators residing within daily commuting distance of the American Museum.

These fellowships, administered by the American Nurses' Association and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, are designed to increase the number of doctorally trained minority nurses in mental health professions, specifically in clinical psychiatric nursing. Applicants must be ethnic/racial minority nurses, including, for example, African-Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, or Native Americans, who are U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. The Clinical Fellowship Program aids minority nurses in pursuing doctoral studies in the area of psychiatric nursing to serve ethnic or racial minority populations. Awards will not exceed $10,008 per year. Fellowships may be extended for a maximum duration of three years. A payback provision accompanies the Fellowship, which requires recipients of the Clinical award to engage in biomedical or behavioral research or teaching for a period of time equal to the length of support beyond the first year of support. The primary goal of this program is to increase the number of ethnic minority mental health researchers and to contribute to the systematic development of knowledge regarding ethnic minority research in nursing. These awards are designed to attract, educate and place ethnic minority researchers in strategic positions in the mental health field; to enhance the quality and quantity of knowledge relevant to understanding and delivering mental health services to ethnic minority individuals and communities; and to stimulate mental health research contributions by ethnic minority scholars to fill identified gaps in knowledge. This program is open to students who have a master's degree in nursing or who will begin full-time study leading to a doctoral degree in nursing or who are currently full-time in a doctoral nursing program; enrollment in a master's only program is ineligible for support. The Fellowship Awards will include a stipend (does not exceed $10,008 per year in any case) to defray living costs. Support may be provided for a maximum of five years.
