The Air Force Office of Scientific Research is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for faculty and graduate students who work in technical disciplines. AFOSR is currently seeking dedicated academic scientists and engineers in a spectrum of technical fields to participate in eight to twelve weeks of paid research this summer. Candidates who are selected to participate will be assigned to one of six Air Force laboratories or five Air Logistics Centers throughout the country, where they will joine with their Air Force colleagues to conduct key research on technologies that are pivotal to our nation's defense. The 1997 program will take place between May 15 and September 30, 1997. Following the conclusion of the Summer Research Program, AFOSR also offers selected participants an opportunity to pursue their AFOSR-sponsored work at their own academic institutions through the award of follow-on research grants (the Summer Research Extension Program) in amounts up to $25,000.
Alpha Lambda Delta
DEADLINE ANNOUNCED: 01/17/97
The National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta will award 15 $3,000 fellowships for graduate study
for the 1997-98 academic year. Any member of Alpha Lambda Delta who graduated with a 3.5
average is eligible to apply. Graduating seniors may apply if they have achieved this average
to the end of the first semester of this year. Applicants will be judged on scholastic record,
recommendations, the soundness of their stated project and purpose, and need. Applications may
be obtained at the Office of Admissions, 300 N. Jordan, on the IU Bloomington campus. The
application must be completed and received at the National Headquarters of Alpha Lambda Delta
by January 17, 1997.
American Antiquarian Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
This fellowship is for research on American prints of the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries or for projects using prints as primary
documentation. Fellowships provide support for one- to three months'
residence in the Society's library at stipends of $950 per month.
Fellowships are open to individuals, including foreign nationals and
persons at work on doctoral dissertations who are engaged in scholarly
research and writing.
American Antiquarian Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
These are short-term visiting fellowships which vary in duration from one
to three months, depending on the Fellow's requirements. The Peterson
Fellowships are open to individuals engaged in scholarly research and
writing in any field in American history and culture through 1876. The
monthly stipend is $950.
American Antiquarian Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
This fellowship provides support for one- to two-months' residence in the
Society's library at a stipend of $950 per month. The fellowship supports
research in the history of the book in American culture.
American Architectural Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
This program provides scholarships for a full year of study at schools
accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board or recognized
by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Applicants may be: 1) in
the third or fourth year of a five-year program that results in a B.Arch.
or equivalent; 2) in the fourth or fifth year of a six-year program that
results in a M.Arch. or equivalent; or 3) in the second or third year of
a three-to-four-year program that results in a M.Arch. and whose
undergraduate degrees are in disciplines other than architecture.
Candidates obtain applications at the office of the head of an accredited
school of architecture. Awards generally range from $500 to $2,500 and
are based on strong academic performance, recommendations and financial
need. Each school must screen its students to determine who may compete.
American Association for Dental Research
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
Student Research Fellowships are intended to encourage dental students
living in the United States to consider careers in oral health research.
Proposals are sought in basic and clinical research related to oral
health. Each Fellowship will consist of a stipend of $2,100 and each
preceptor will receive an award of $300 for supplies. Upon completion of
the research (must be completed within two years), acceptance of an
abstract, and submission of a find report, each recipient will be awarded
funds ($600) for transportation and accommodations to an Association
meeting to present research results. Students must be enrolled in an
accredited DDS/DMD or hygiene program in a U.S. dental (health
associated) institution and must be sponsored by a faculty member at that
institution. Students should not have received their degree, nor should
they be due to receive their degree in the year of the award (1997).

American Association of Dental Schools
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The purpose of this award is to encourage excellence in preventive
dentistry by recognizing student achievements in that area. Each U.S.
dental school is entitled to submit up to three nominees, who must be
nominated by their dean. Ten winners will be selected, each receiving a
$2,500 scholarship to be applied toward tuition and fees associated with
predoctoral study. Students must be individual members of the American
Association of Dental Schools.
American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The American Home Economics Association Foundation awards International
Fellowships of $3,000 each year to support study in family and consumer
sciences. Fellowships are available to citizens of other countries to
study in the U.S. There is a nonrefundable $15 application fee for
international students living in the U.S.
American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation

The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS)
Foundation awards a number of National Fellowships supporting graduate
study in family and consumer sciences. There is a nonrefundable
application fee of $15 for AHEA members, $30 for nonmembers.
American Association of Petroleum Geologists
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
The purpose of the Program is to support graduate students in the earth
sciences whose research has application to the search for and development
of petroleum and energy-minerals resources, and to related environmental
geology issues. Grants are to be applied to expenses directly related to
the student's thesis work, such as summer field work, analytical
analyses, etc. Funds are not to be used to purchase capital equipment,
attend conferences, or to pay salaries, tuition, or room and board during
the school year. Funds should be spent during 1997. The program focuses
on support of qualified candidates for masters and equivalent degrees.
Qualified doctoral candidates with expenses outside the usual scope of
funding by other agencies are also encouraged to apply. Grants will be
for a maximum of $2,000. The above deadline is for students enrolled in
Northern Hemisphere schools; the deadline for students enrolled in
Southern Hemisphere schools was November 1, 1996.
American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The AAUW Educational Foundation offers Career Development Grants for
women who are in the early stages of graduate studies in order to
re-enter the work force, change careers, or advance their current
careers. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have
earned a bachelor's degree, and have received their last degree before
June 30, 1992. They must pursue course work at a fully accredited two- or
four-year college or university or at a technical school licensed,
accredited, or approved by the Federal Veterans Administration.
Applicants must also enroll in courses that are prerequisites for
professional employment plans. Doctoral candidates may seek funding for
course work only, not for researching or writing their dissertations.
Candidates eligible for another AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship or
grant program are not eligible for Career Development Grants. Special
consideration is given to qualified AAUW members, women of color, women
pursuing their first terminal degree, and women pursuing degrees in
nontraditional fields. Funds are available for tuition, fees, books,
supplies, local transportation, and dependent care. Grants range from
$1,000 to $5,000. Applications are available from August 1 to December
20, 1996. The application postmark deadline is January 3, 1997.
American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
International Fellowships for full-time graduate or postgraduate study or
research in the United States are awarded to women who are not U.S.
citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must have earned the
equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree before December 1, 1996, and show
outstanding academic ability. The AAUW Educational Foundation judges
applicants on their professional potential and the importance of their
studies to women and girls in their country of origin. Preference will be
given to women who show prior commitment to the advancement of women and
girls through civic, community, or professional work. Six of the 43
fellowships available are jointly sponsored by the International
Federation of University Women and are reserved for women who are members
of IFUW affiliate organizations. Recipients of these AAUW Educational
Foundation/IFUW fellowships may study in any country other than their
own. The stipend is $15,160. Applications are available from August 1,
1996 to November 15, 1996. The application postmark deadline is December
2, 1996; applications must be sent via airmail from abroad.
American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
These fellowships assist minority women in their final year of
professional training in the fields of law (J.D.), medicine (M.D. or
D.O.), or business administration (MBA, two-year, and executive programs
only). Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited U.S.
institution. The award period is for one academic year, September to
June. Applicants must be ready to begin the final year of the degree
program in September 1997. Stipends range from $5,000 to $9,500. Special
consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate professional
promise in innovative or neglected areas of research and/or practice in
public interest concerns. Eligible candidates are African Americans,
Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, other Latinas, American Indians,
Alaskan Natives, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Applications for
all fellowships except those for the MBA are available from August 1 to
December 2, 1996; the application postmark deadline for these fellowships
is December 17, 1996. Applications for fellowships for the MBA only are
available from August 1, 1996 to January 21, 1997; the application
postmark deadline for these fellowships is February 4, 1997.
American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
These fellowships are awarded to women in designated fields where female
participation traditionally has been low: architecture,
computer/information science, engineering, and mathematics/statistics.
Fellowships are available for the final year of a master's degree in
these areas (including one-year programs). Applications are available
from August 1 to December 2, 1996; the application postmark deadline is
December 17, 1996. Fellowships range from $5,000 to $9,500 each for
full-time study.
American Chemical Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Prize or Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding graduate student
and his or her preceptor(s), in the field of chemistry, as broadly
defined. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The graduate student will receive $3,000 and a
plaque containing the signatures of Nobel Laureates. The student's
preceptor(s) will receive $3,000 and a plaque for permanent display in
the institution's Chemistry Department. Traveling expenses of recipient's
incidental to the conferring of the award will be paid. APPLICANT
INFORMATION: The graduate student nominee must have completed a Ph.D.
dissertation in chemistry within the 12-month period before the deadline
for receipt of nominations. The award will recognize only work done while
the nominee was a graduate student. This award will be granted without
regard to age or nationality.
American Chemical Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
Nominations for the Fellowship Program should be submitted by the
applicant's Ph.D. advisor. Nominees must be made in their second or third
year of graduate study at the time of application, engaged in medicinal
chemistry research in a medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry,
biochemistry or chemistry department listed in the current American
Chemical Society Directory of Graduate Research. The student must be a
U.S. citizen or permanent resident visa holder at the time of
application. The student may not be concurrently supported by another
fellowship. Successful nominations will receive the $18,000 stipend
starting September 1, 1997. The awards are not renewable. Fellowship
recipients will be required to attend the Fall National ACS meeting
during the academic year of their award and present a paper or poster on
their research. At this meeting they will receive a plaque commemorating
their award and a $400 travel grant to defray the cost of the trip.
American Concrete Institute
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The program is open to any student who has received a bachelor degree
from an accredited engineering program by the summer of 1997 for graduate
study in the field of concrete for the 1997-98 academic year. It is
subject to the requirement that the applicant be accepted for graduate
study at an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada which
offers a graduate program in concrete design, materials, or construction,
with the exception of materials science research. First-year graduate
students are eligible to apply. Applicants must also be proficient in the
English language (or French as required in Province of Quebec or Spanish
in Puerto Rico). Awards are $3,000.
American Congress on Surveying and Mapping
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The objective of the Graduate Fellowship award is to encourage, recognize
and support exceptional surveying and mapping students. The award is
$2,000 and is presented at ACSM Annual Meeting. The award is to be used
for graduate study in a program with a significant focus on geodetic
surveying or geodesy at a school of the recipient's choice. Prior
employment for at least two years in the surveying profession is
expected. Applicants must demonstrate proof of ACSM membership. Students
planning to graduate in May, June or August of the year in which the
award will be presented do not qualify for an award. Prior scholarship
winners are eligible to apply in a succeeding years providing all
appropriate criteria are satisfied.
American Council of Learned Societies
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
The Fellowships and Grants for East European Studies program offers
fellowships for research and training in the social sciences and
humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary,
Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the successor states of Yugoslavia.
Proposals dealing with Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and the former
Yugoslavia are particularly encouraged. All proposals should be for
scholarly work, the product of which is to be disseminated in English.
East European Language Training Grants for individuals are intended for
people who will use the East European languages in their academic or
other professional careers. SUPPORT PROVIDED: $2,000 will be offered for
first- or second-year study of any East European language (except the
languages of the Commonwealth of Independent States) in the United
States. Grants of $2,500 will be offered for intermediate or advanced
training in these languages in Eastern Europe. APPLICANT INFORMATION:
Applicants must hold a four-year college degree at minimum; graduate
students and postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to apply.
American Council of Learned Societies
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
The Grants for East European Studies program offers fellowships for
research and training in the social sciences and humanities relating to
Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania,
Slovakia, and the successor states of Yugoslavia. Proposals dealing with
Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and the former Yugoslavia are particularly
encouraged. All proposals should be for scholarly work, the product of
which is to be disseminated in English. Predissertation Travel Grants
are for students who are beginning to formulate a research program for a
dissertation on East Europe but lack the necessary field experience.
These predissertation grants are intended to help such students define
and shape the dissertation proposal and possibly begin their research by
providing travel, maintenance, and research support for an investigatory
trip to East Europe. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Predissertation travel grants are
made for up to $5,000. APPLICANT INFORMATION: Applicants must be
graduate students who have been accepted into a Ph.D. program and will
have completed at least one year of full-time graduate study by June 1,
1997.
American Digestive Health Foundation
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Prize or Award
The American Digestive Health Foundation (ADHF) was established by the
American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Society
for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) to advance digestive health through
support of research and education in the causes, prevention, treatment,
and cure of digestive diseases. (The American Association for the Study
of Liver Diseases recently joined the ADHF.) This prize is for the best
abstract by a student or medical resident submitted for presentation at
the AGA Annual Meeting during Digestive Disease Week. A travel allowance
to attend the meeting to present the abstract will be provided, along
with an award certificate, an honorarium, and publication of the abstract
in Gastroenterology. The objective of the Prize is to stimulate interest
in research through competition and recognition and to provide travel
support to enable students to present the results of their research at
the AGA Annual Meeting. Any high school, medical, premedical,
predoctoral student, or medical resident who has performed original
research related to gastroenterology is eligible for this competition.
For this award, applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration
for the prize. The winner of this competition will receive all
reasonable expenses for a trip to the AGA Annual Meeting to present the
abstract; a certificate plus a $500 honorarium; and publication of the
abstract in Gastroenterology. The next five runners-up will receive
travel support to attend the meeting, up to $1,000 each. Other selected
runners-up will receive up to $500 in travel support. All support will
be in the form of reimbursement after submission of receipts to the ADHF
National Office. Students must submit abstracts prepared on AGA abstract
forms, and a completed application form, and they must have a sponsor who
is a member of any of the ADHF member organizations. All abstracts of
those selected for the prize or for other support (e.g., runners-up) will
be published in the program without charge. Up to 33 awards are
available under this competition. Applicants must be sponsored by an
individual member of any of the ADHF member organizations and have
performed the research with the sponsor.
American Federation for Aging Research
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
This program was designed to offer medical students an opportunity to
explore the field of geriatric pharmacology and acquire an understanding
of its challenges. Up to seven scholarships of $4,000 will be awarded in
1997 for students to undertake an eight- to twelve-week, full time
research project on any subject in the field of geriatric pharmacology.
The subject may be drawn from the basic, clinical, behavioral, or health
services sciences. The research project must be conducted under the
supervision of a faculty mentor. It may be carried out in any setting
(i.e., medical school, hospital, university, pharmaceutical company,
nursing home, government, or non-government agency). There may also be an
opportunity for participants to present a poster at the May 1998 joint
annual meeting of the American Geriatrics Society and the American
Federation for Aging Research. Medical students who have completed at
least one year of medical school are eligible to apply. Applicants must
be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
American Foundation for Vision Awareness
CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED: U.S. Citizens
The AFVA Educational Grant is to assist students in meeting the costs of
their optometric education. Scholarship(s) in the amount of $1,000 will
be awarded directly to the institution where the student is enrolled.
Applicants must have successfully completed at least one semester at an
accredited school of optometry and demonstrate participation in vision-
related public service activities.
American Geological Institute
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Indiv or Advanced Study or Training
Those eligible for this scholarship are geoscience majors who are U.S.
citizens and have verifiable ethnic minority status as Black, Hispanic,
or Native Americans, (American Indian, Eskimo, Hawaiian, or Samoan).
Financial support is for full time students only, with demonstrable
financial need, and enrolled in an accredited institution as an
undergraduate or graduate student majoring in geoscience. Sub-disciplines
included are geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology,
physical oceanography, planetary geology, or earth-science education.
This program does not support students in other natural sciences,
mathematics, or engineering.
American Geriatrics Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Prize or Award
This award is presented annually to a medical student interested in
geriatrics, who has demonstrated excellence in this field. To be eligible
for nomination a student must have demonstrated: leadership ability in
areas pertinent to geriatrics; initiation of new information or programs;
or scholarship through original research or reviews. The student must be
nominated by one faculty member with at least two supporting letters of
nomination from other faculty. The award is a $500 travel stipend to
attend the Annual Meeting. In addition, the awardee will be honored with
a plaque at the AGS awards ceremony and the annual meeting registration
fee is waived.
American Geriatrics Society
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Prize or Award
A Student Research Award will be given to the student presenting the most
outstanding paper at the AGS annual meeting. The awardee will be chosen
based on originality, scientific merit and relevance of the research. All
students who submit abstracts to the AGS annual meeting will be
considered for this award. The awardee will present their research at the
annual meeting. The student awardees' annual meeting registration fee
will be waived and a travel stipend to attend the AGS annual meeting will
be provided. To apply for the Student Research Award, students must
submit an abstract of research or research-in-progress on the official
AGS abstract form. In addition, the student's curriculum vitae and a
letter from the student's advisor verifying the student's contribution to
the work must be provided. The award is a $500 travel stipend to attend
the Annual Meeting. The awardee will be honored with a plaque at the
awards ceremony and the annual meeting registration fee will be waived.
American Historical Association
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
These grants support research in the history of the Western hemisphere
(United States, Canada, and Latin America). Only members of the
Association are eligible. The grants are awarded annually and are
intended to further research in progress and may be used for travel to a
library or archive among other purposes. Preference will be given to
junior scholars and PhD candidates. No individual will be eligible to
receive, within a five-year period, more than $1,000 cumulative from the

American Historical Association
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
This program will annually fund at least one fellow, for a period of six
months to a year, to undertake a proposed research project related to
aerospace history. The research may be in all aspects of the history of
aerospace from the earliest human interest in flight to the present,
including cultural and intellectual history, economic history, history of
law and public policy, and the history of science, engineering, and
management. The fellow will have the opportunity to use the documentary
resources of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and may
also spend the fellowship in residence at the NASA headquarters or one of
the NASA centers. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and either possess a
doctorate degree in history or in a closely related field, or be enrolled
as a student (having completed all course work) in a doctoral
degree-granting program. The maximum fellowship stipend is $25,000
($16,000 for graduate students), adjustable to the length of the
fellowship term; a relocation and travel allowance of $1,000 is also
available.
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
The purpose of this program is to provide scholarship awards to qualified
students actively participating in specific research endeavors as part of
their graduate studies. These endeavors include master's or doctoral
thesis research and master's (non-thesis) research projects. The
scholarship program provides $1,000 awards annually. Applicants must have
completed at least one academic year of full-time graduate college work,
have an approved thesis or research project specializing in one of the
approved areas, and must become an AIAA student member. There are four
awards in different areas of specialization: Command, Control,
Communications, and Intelligence Graduate Award; Gordon C. Oates Air
Breathing Propulsion Graduate Award; the Liquid Propulsion Graduate
Award; and the William T. Piper, Sr. General Aviation Systems Graduate
Award. The above deadline is to request application materials;
applications must be postmarked by January 31, 1997.
American Institute of Architects
ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED: Research or Dissertation
This program is sponsored jointly with the American Hospital Association.
The purpose of this fellowship is to increase the awareness of
architecture students to the special needs and nature of health care
facilities, and to advance the knowledge of planning and design for
health care environments. Applications may be for 1) graduate study to be
completed within one academic year in any accredited school of
architecture associated with a school of hospital administration or near
hospital resources which are adequate to supplement the prescribed
graduate architecture courses in health facilities design, 2) independent
graduate-level study, research, or design in the health facilities field,

innovative uses of technology and proposals that involve cooperation
between libraries, between libraries and other agencies, or between
librarians and persons in other disciplines will also receive special
consideration. The grant consists of an amount up to $7,500 and a

projects that involve both a practicing librarian and a researcher are

preceptor in hepatic physiology or disease. Each award will provide a
$2,500 stipend for the period of the research project. These fellowships
are not given for terminal Ph.D. funding.

The American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation's
Board of Directors established the International Medical Student Studies
Program to encourage U.S. medical student participation in unique medical
education programs abroad to supplement their U.S. educational
experience. Bi-annually, one stipend of $1,000 is available to a
qualified medical student to help defray expenses associated with his/her
educational experience abroad. The goals of such a program may include
the following: 1) Comparing health care delivery systems in the selected
country and the U.S.; 2) Examining organized medicine's role in health
policy that is developed in the selected country; 3) Identifying the
important medical education issues in the selected country; 4) Learning
different approaches to problem solving and broadening clinical skills
and judgments while in training; and 5) Expanding research opportunities.
The September deadline is for the period January-June; the January
deadline is for July-December.

The Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior
medical student with a demonstrated interest in the communication of
science. Individuals who will be considered for the scholarship will be
selected from among nominees proposed by the Deans of AMA approved
medical schools. Each school may propose one student. The scholarship
is for $2,500. The following materials should be submitted: 1) letter of
nomination from the Office of the Dean; 2) letter and CV from the
student; 3) letter from the Director of the Library, Audio-Visual unit,
or other appropriate professional person interested in communications and
familiar with the student's work; and 4) reprints or other materials
prepared by the student to support the nomination (3-4 prime examples are
sufficient).

These grants provide financial assistance to enable predoctoral and recent
postdoctoral investigators to study any of the scientific collections at the
American Museum. These collections represent the fields of vertebrate zoology,
invertebrate zoology, paleozoology, anthropology, and mineral sciences. The
awards partially support travel and subsistence; visits are arranged through and
approved by the appropriate scientific department of the museum and are expected
to be four days or longer in duration. Applicants should first contact the staff
to discuss the feasibility of the proposed visit prior to requesting the
special application form. Applications may be submitted at any time during
the year. Only one collection study grant will be awarded to an individual.
